PS3 HDD Swap

Hello everyone,

i just want to know what is the largest capactity HDD i can fit inside my FAT PS3?

Last i heard they needed to be 2.5" and the 1TB required a little handy work on the case.

Is there any 1TB hdd's out now which will fit in properly?

the 1tb 2.5 are physicaly too big to fit since they are 12.5mm thick. you need 9.5 mm thick and the largest size that comes in that thickness is 750gb.

I'm also trying to find out what is the max size to put in internally without any problems or lag

Quite recently, you can now put an 750GB HDD from Western Digital. I have this and it works without any problems. However, because PS3 uses FAT32, it's eating a lot of space from the harddisk. I lost 60GB because of FAT32.

The PS3 does not use FAT32, it uses a proprietary file system afaik.

The space you lost is probably less than 60 GB. For example, a "1 TB drive" measures a KB as 10^3 bytes (1000) whereas operating systems measure KB as 2^10 bytes (1024). This difference might not seem like a lot, but it means that what a manufacturer calls a 1 TB drive really only has ~931 GB.

On top of that, depending on file system the PS3 actually does use, one could lose a little space to do file system specifics. For example, ext4 (the default Linux file system) one might lose 20 GB or so of a 1 TB drive to journaling. Finally, the PS3 has to use some of the space for its OS and software.

Anyway, the PS3 does not use FAT32 and even if it did, that wouldn't be why you "lost" 60 GB.

Thanks for the info, now I'm even more confused.
You're right about the manufacteur thing however:
The Harddisk says it's 750GB. The System Information says it's 698GB. That's a loss of 52GB. Normally, the real size would be ~732GB. That's still 34GB lost. I don't think the OS itself would take a lot of space like this.

Dude, I got a 2Tb in my server and it shows up as 1.81Tb, I'm pretty sure that thats a loss of 200Gb, so maybe your drive is suppose to lose that much?

EDIT: And btw, that 2Tb HDD of mine ISN'T the OS HDD, that one is just for storage, and formated in NTFS.

Addition to what has been said above; the PS3 takes 10-12% of the remaining space for the OS and cache. This CANNOT be circumvented, so if you've got a 1TB HDD inside then expect to have around 840GB usable.

Does anyone know what the PS3 file system is based on? I know they do some magic proprietary stuff to it in order to give it some of its security features, but I highly doubt Sony created an entire file system from the ground up. Is it ext based? If so then some of the space could be lost to journaling.
