ps3 fimware version –
09-13-2012,08:01 PM
allliright i just picked up a slim 120gb ps3 from the bay which had a problem with the system can not be run, it also asked for a update 3.56 or higher, my question is could the console be on 3.55 or would it be on 3.56. acording to the seller on the bay they recon the ps3 is on 3.55 just the update will always say a higer version for when it needs to be restored. personally i think the console is on 3.56 but i just wanted to check first

Ok, is the system running or not? If it's running, when does it ask for an update, and what firmware version does it report(look in system settings-system info)?

He's got a semi-brick. He needs to boot into recovery mode, format the hard drive, and possibly restore PS3 system. After that try installing 3.55 from recovery menu (make sure you take any discs out first).
To get into recovery menu
- Turn off PS3
- press and hold power button until you hear 3 distinct sets of beeps. It will turn off again
- repeat above step until you see the recovery menu

Bahumatlord blows me away with his knowledge.
Reflexdarky, you probably know this but, DO NOT update past 3.55 if you want to jailbreak.

I've also seen that message about the system cannot be run when the partitioning table gets screwed up on the hard drive or damaged in another way like from falls/drops. You said you just got it. Was it packaged well and did you see any damage on the box?
If the above info doesn't help you you might have to remove the hard drive, connect it to your PC with a USB enclosure (you can find one on amazon.com for around $5 if you don't have one). Grab Easeus partition manager (free) and delete the partition, and create a new unformatted primary partition. Plug it back in your PS3 and let your PS3 format the drive

so your the guy who bought that system out from under me :0
j/k :P
if its a slim.... and you format the hdd.... you will need to reinstall the firmware....
on a side note. i have seen where someone accidentally updated to 3.70 but cut the power almost as soon as it started to update.... he formatted the hdd and reinstalled it in the ps3 and it said to install 3.55 or above. so you could get lucky unless it updated all the way to 3.56 if it completed the update then you may end up having to get a hardware flasher. i dont even think you can install the JFW 3.56 CFW without a flasher, i may be wrong tho.
bahumatlord is beast with his ps3 knowledge. he wont steer you wrong

Sounds like it is on 3.56 then. Contact the seller and see how he thought you could put 3.55 on it. I'd try to return it if you were looking for a 3.55 machine
