Hi man you need the drive to read some otherwise the games that needs a disc in drive will not work. But alots of games works from hd without disc in drive . Hope that helps you

Does it read regular DVDs?

If it reads regular DVD movies and just not blu ray or games then it is just the lens and the actual drive is fine.

If it is just the lens it is a simple $60-80 fix, and then install which is really really easy and takes about 10 minutes.

Also for now while you wait to get it fixed you can play games using a backup manager that has the diskless feature. Older versions of Gaia do, not sure about the others.

3.41 is still the way to go for discless compatibility. Everyone seems to forget that updgraded to 3.55. 3.41 plays a vast majority of games all discless. Only a very few I know of that wont play discless. And now with Hermes 3.41 CFW and Hmanager it is as easy as ever, no need for a hard reset or the dongle. I would recommend you get on FW 3.41 if you are not already. A downgrade may be necessary if your on higher FW. Couldnt hurt trying to get the lens fixed too since you'll still need a way to backup the games. Up to you though, many things to consider.
