Ok guys, cos i know you guys are probably the most reliable here, i need to know, rightnow i have a guy here who has 2 PS3's that he's selling and I want to get one, they are both Used and in working condition. So Which one?
PS3 FAT 40gb FW 3.55
OR
PS3 SLIM 120gb FW 3.15.
Please let me know which you think.

The 40GB is propably the worst model. Majority of hardware problems happen to it.
Broken laser and YLOD are common.
Take the Slim. While it's propably the first revision it's still much better choice than 40GB model.
There is nothing different in features between these models. No PS2 games on both if you were thiinking about that.

how often do YLOD or problems occur on the SLIM?

I have both models, though the slim is a revision 2 and not rev 1. So the run down, the 40g has a loud fan during summer, the slim has a shitty HDMI output at 1080p since day 1.Your choice, 40g sold more as it was cheaper which would maybe? explain the failure rate. If you don't know the history of either of these, luck would suggest getting the slim.

eh, i disagree on the failure rate of the 40gb model. if you were unaware, there are TWO models of 40gb - one with a single laser bluray (cechg) & the other with a dual laser bluray (cechh). the difference is the cechh is actually the SECOND gen fatty, with a cpu/gpu with lower power consumptions. the cechg is a stripped version of the FIRST gen 20/60 launch models and still runs the 95nm/95nm cpu/gpu. in my opinion, the cechh 40gb fatty runs the coolest out of all the ps3s, except for maybe the latest 45nm/45nm cpu/gpu found in the cech-2101 (starting aug 2010). think about it for a second: 1st & 2nd gen fatty ps3s. same physical size outer, same physical size heatsink & fan inner. the older has a power-hungry 95nm/95nm original cpu/gpu, the latter has a 65nm/65nm cpu/gpu with the SAME SIZE heatsink & fan. the first gen slim was also a 65nm/65nm cpu/gpu, but got a SMALLER heatsink and SMALLER fan - which is why the 1st gen slims had a heat issue when overplayed. the current 45nm/45nm ps3 slims probably fit the newer slim case better (heatsink & fan size) than its predecessor.
all of that set aside, even the hot running launch ps3s can stay cool running if the necessary factory flaws are addressed. the flaw is sony NOT putting loctite or lock washers on the screws that hold the heatsink onto the motherboard. over time, vibrations from the fan shake the screws loose, heatsink separates from the cpu & gpu, yellow light of death occurs. i have 3 ps3s - a launch 60gb, a cechh 40gb and a cech-2001 120gb slim (yes, the one that runs hot). all of them has had loctite applied to the heatsink as soon as the warranty expired (as well as new thermal compound) and ironically, my launch 60gb is the QUIETEST. its fan never gets faster than 3rd gear (5 speeds total) and all 3 ps3s get equal playtime in similar environments. if you properly prepare your ps3, ANY PS3, it'll run cool, it'll last long, and you'll be a happy gamer.
oh, and to the OP, i'd get the 120gb slim over the 40gb fat only because it already has a bigger hdd and is a lot easier to keep looking "new", whereas the 40gb fatty is probably already scratched up.

as far as i know, the cechg is a 95nm and the cechh is a 65nm. i dont think those charts are correct. there was a wiki page that had descriptions of the different processors (which i would trust more), but it lists both the cechg & cechh as 90nm/65nm. i have both ps3s and from a hardware standpoint, the cechh has a different, lower wattage power supply while the cechg has the chrome one the 20/60gb ps3s also have. also, the motherboard layout is more similar to a 20/60gb motherboard with the same physical size & shape for the cpu & gpu, whereas the cechh has a smaller motherboard and slightly smaller cpu & gpu.

I hate slims but in this case i would go with the slim because of the disk space. The first ps3 i had was a 40gb and in one week the space was gone just from the songs and movies i added. And of course,if you want to jailbreak it and play back-up games you need a lot of space.Imagine,i have a 250gb internal hdd and one external 500 gb both are full.If i were you and because i love fat ps3 i would go with the fat and just buy a new hdd from ebay with 30-40 pounds.
