Is it possible to use a Blu-ray drive from a CECHG01 40 GB PS3 in a CECHE01 80 GB PS3? –

I have a CECHE01 PS3 (80 GB) that has a non-working Blu-ray drive. It reads discs for only a few minutes then the system freezes, so I am guessing the laser or motor in the drive is bad. I want to replace it with a spare drive I have from a CECHG01 (40 GB) PS3. I have tried simply swapping the drives but that did not work. I learned that I might be able to swap the circuit boards from the 80 GB into the drive of the 40 GB to have a working drive that can be used in my 80 GB. I opened up the drives and it's a bit more complicated than I thought. The 80 GB has a circuit board on the outside and bottom of the drive as well as some smaller ones inside. The 40 GB has only a few small ones inside. I am lost now and do not know what to do. Is it even possible to swap the logic boards and have it work? Can I swap the lasers assembly to have it working? Please help me.

if the boards on the bottom match up, then it should work, you just take the drive board off the bottom and put it on the other drive, otherwise you need to downgrade with the QA flag firmware and then remarry the new drive and board.

The 40 GB Blu-ray drive does not have a board on the bottom though. Only the 80 GB does. What does "downgrade with the QA flag firmware and then remarry the new drive and board" mean? I do not understand what QA flag firmware is and how to do or get it.

First you must be on 3.55 or below, but since you are on a jailbreak forum, you should be good to go.
You only have to physically swap the drives and then remarry the new drive with your system. It is necessary for it to work.
For that, you have to downgrade your firmware, so, or you have a dongle and put you system in service mode and then do the downgrade, or you use the QA Flag method (google it).
Once you do that, you can do, the remarry procedure h t t p : / / psx-scene . com / forums / f6 / finally-remarry-bd-drives-other-consoles-83352/
I already remarry 2 consoles (40gb to 80gb and vice versa). With one went to 3.15, but with another had to go to 2.80.
When you downgrade you will loose all you data, so back it up first.
What I did, as I have a 750gb hdd and it was a lot of data to backup, was this:
"If you dont want or cant backup your hdd in a downgrade process (for example to marry your bluray) just remove your hdd, and replace it with another one (the data on this last one will be lost).
Make the downgrade process as you wish and then when you return to your inicial firmware, just put you first hdd data disk inside of console again and voilá! everything is there!" h t t p : / / psx-scene . com / forums / f118 / opinion-remarrie-bd-backup-hdd0-88950/
Good Luck
