I tried searching but to no avail, so I'd like to ask:

Is there currently any way to switch to the Japanese control scheme where O is confirm and X is cancel or even change one's region if need be on their PS3?

This has always been an annoyance of mine particularly when playing games of Japanese origin and I'd love to buy a dongle if it means I can "fix" this on my PS3.

I would assume that it's a simple toggle in the PS3's registry now that it's a global setting based on region and no longer a game-by-game situation like the PS1 and PS2.

So, any options at the moment, or should I hold off on modding my PS3?

Use FTP to download /dev_flash2/etc/xRegistry.sys (create a copy just to be safe)
    Open with xRegistry.sys Editor
Change the value of setting/system/buttonAssign from 00000000 to 0000001 and click save
Save the file and upload it to /dev_flash2/etc/xRegistry.sys overwriting the existing file

This will permanently change the button layout, no need to go through this process again unless you want to revert back to the original button layout.

Star Wars sucks because George Lucas ripped off shagratt71 and i just donate $349.99 for a new ps3

He's working his way to screw us all... Change all the PS3 homebrew to donationware

    Change & Buttons permanently !!!

    You need:

    - FTP Client for PS3 (z.B. FTPServer 1.1 v. blackb0x)

    - FTP Client for PC (z.B. Filezilla, UltraFXP)

    - xRegistry Editor V.0.75

    Step by Step:

    - activate FTPServer on PS3

    - Start FTP Client on

    - in FTP Client browse to PS3 nach /dev_flash2/etc/xRegistry.sys

    - copy the xRegistry.sys to PC (make a Backup !!!)

    - start xRegistry Editor & open xRegistry.sys File

    - search for Entry /setting/system/buttonAssign

    - change Value 00000000 to 00000001 (asian to european/americian)
    (0 = is enter, 1 = is enter)

    - push Save Button to save

    - copy or overwrite xRegistry.sys with FTP Client back to /dev_flash2/etc/xRegistry.sys

    - reboot PS3

Now, your & buttons shout permanently changed.

Helpful Informations to manipulate the xregistry.sys File.

Holy sh!t! I've tried the same exact method. However, xRegistry editor did not save the file after I modify it. I've used another tool which incorporates xRegistry editor functionality and then saving worked, but all I got was a corrupted system.
