So, I've recently just got a 4.30 CFW PS3 and tried to play discs but usually get game freezes, 80010514 errors and the blu-ray disc icon not showing. I suspect it's the PS3 laser.
Sigh, I got ripped off, my seller didn't remind me of this problem...

I'm just wondering... is it possible to play ALL backups without a disc inside the BD drive?

Rebug 4.21 and DEX firmwares have a perfect BD emulator that will play games disc less.

I would advise you to get your money back. If you bought it in person then you should of taken the proper steps in buying a used unit by fully testing it to see if it was in 100% working condition. If you bought it from online then you have every right to file a dispute and get your money back.

Yes BD emulator works but that is never 100% most games you will encounter it will require a disk to be inside for you to play it. Blu Ray drive is an important part in your ps3 and that need to be working at all times.

So 65% backups work discless but 35% (mostly good games) you will need a disc for.

On CFW 3.55 I know the answer is no. A lot of games work discless but not all. However there was a work around if you install them like a PSN package I believe they all worked.

On CFW 4.21/4.30 I dont know. Since some games required disc before, I always leave a disc in. I tested all the games when I upgraded, but I had the disc in. At least they all worked. I imagine it would be about the same compatibility.

The error you are receiving might not be the drive though.

First, I know some version of ROGERO CFW had problems with calibration of the blu-ray, he had instructions on how to manually recalibrate try that first!

Second, can you play other discs, blu-rays, games?

If you can play other blu-ray games discs, check you see if you have any installed game data and delete it. Sometimes the error can come from a bad sector on HD, install fine, but have errors.

If you can play other blu-ray movies, it may be a corrupt install of FW that causes bad processing of the game. Downgrade to 3.55 (I cannot stress this enough) Go into recovery menu and choose restore filesystem. If that doesnt work you will need to format the drive. Backup yours SAVEs (though you might not have any since this PS3 is new to you) Then format. This should recover any corrupted files. If this doesn't work a last ditch effort is to try a different HD as bad sectors might be screwing it up.

If all this fails you may indeed have a broken bluray drive, the above is just to test everything. You can either live with it possibly not have some games work, or replace the drive. Sorry

    Code:
ERROR CODE = 0x80010514 = Possibly reading blu-ray disc problem
    SOURCE

I have done the BD Emulator on REBUG REX 4.21.1. I made a CECHA01 think that a USB flash drive was a blu ray drive. The PS3 didn't even have a blu ray drive attached. Only a married logic board. All games will run discless with that method.

I followed this guide to accomplish it.

There are a few games that require a disc. In multiMAN, enable the BD-Mirror feature for each game you test, to see if that helps you out. Recently there has been a great improvement in BD-Mirror in multiMAN 04.14.00--I suggest to install that version. But you will still have to enable that feature per game in the game options for each game backup.

Also it's wise to consult with compatibility charts to see what others recommend for game settings: http://www.pshomebrew.net/wiki/PS3_B...atibility_List

I hope you resolve your issue.
