Ok, here's my opinion on this. DO NOT take the shell off unless you're going to reball. Each reflow let's the PS3 last different times. Some long, some short. The longest I've read was one that lasted up to 8 months.
Reflow is temporary
Reball is permanent, though VERY difficult and VERY hard

Using a hairdryer wont work lol (or wont get best results). It doesn't heat the solder enough to reset the hairline cracks within it! You need to be using a heat gun to get the job done right.
I did mine & it's still going strong after 9 months.

It is hard for me to believe myself, but since I was off work today and had the time, I took apart a ylod cechl01 that I scored for $25 online a few years ago. Followed a decent tut and stuck the mother board in the oven for 10 minutes at 420F reassembled with arctic silver 5 and now it works great and has 3.0 ofw, so far.

i read about that oven method but i thought it was pretty risky! i've fixed my ps3 using the reflow method and it's been working for about 4 months so far.. it's a risky method but what else can you do? the reball method sounds like something i definitely couldn't do that's for sure
