Please, help me update PlayTV
Please, help me update PlayTV –

Howdy. Let's get straight to the point:
I have a FAT PS3 (I guess it's not a BC unit). I've kept it on firm 3.15 'till now, 'cause I want to be able "to get online and write texts with it" (using it as a secondary computer). For that, I guessed I'd need its OtherOS feature, but since I haven't needed it yet (as a secondary computer), I haven't even installed it. I do have PlayTV, though.
Recent developments on the scene made me rethink my approach: I guess that soon we'll be able to "get online" even without PSN access, so as to at least use its browser. Through that I'll be able to browse some sites and probably write some stuff through access to Google Docs. So, I'm on the verge of updating and jailbreaking it. One more thing I'd earn through that is that my damn PlayTV would finally work. Let me explain...
I live in Greece, and PlayTV used to work OK with 3-4 digital channels we had. Now, a lot more digital channels appeared, but they use a different encoding standard. One which I guess the latest software version of PlayTV supports, but which I'm not able to install on my PS3 since "I can't get on PSN" (like most of you). I don't want to update my console to 3.42 just to get PlayTV, so, is there any other way I could do it? I guess that IF someone gave me a link to its update PKG, and IF I jailbreaked my PS3, I'd be able to run it as any normal PKG file to install it.
Am I guessing right? Is there any other way to update its software without updating my PS3 firmware, or without jailbreaking the console?
Please, help out a bit, since I paid almost 100 euros to use a device that at the moment sits collecting dust.
Thanks in advance.

I dare say that the files necessery to update the device will be available in PKG form at some point soon.
When I get my dongle I'll have a look into the structure on the HDD, see what I can see as I have the updated Play TV and post back here...

Since you wish to remain on firmware 3.15 then your first point will be to wait for psgroove 1.1 via RichDevX to be available and jailbroken for all firmwares pre 3.42 (till 2.01 i think) at the moment you will need to be on 3.41 to jailbreak and possibly update your play tv via pkg/demo installer type methods

Ah, thanks. So, I guess that all my options rely on me playing the... waiting game! :-)
No problem, since "my PlayTV doesn't work for me either way". I guess I'll wait and see how PSGroove for pre-4.31 plays out. Ah, and thanks Xeauron, I'd really appreciate it. At least, if no playTV PKG comes out, but you could provide me with the files, I guess I'd be able to... err... dunno, "add them to the HDD and load them from there with a Custom Firmware" or somthing (when I finally JB my PS3).
And something else: yes, there isn't a way to "go online with PS3", but most people mean "get on the PSN/play multiplayer" when they mention that. Does anyone know if there IS a way "to go online" but just "to visit sites through PS3s browser"? Maybe through some Proxy?

safest bet don't but we will...but if you are then just create a new user without psn and use that account for best option type thing

So, now that I can finally jailbreak my 3.15 PS3, can anyone give me some help as to "how to update to the latest available PlayTV pkg through USB"? Is it available anywhere online (didn't manage to find it)? Does anyone have it and could he, please, provide it?
I'm sorry if "its copyrighted software", I'm not asking for a copy, backup or anything - if anyone can point me to an "official" way of upgrading my legally purchased PlayTV on my legally purchased PS3 -without- having to update my console so as to get on PSN, I'd be even grateful. I just want a way to use what I paid for, not "pirate Sonys software".
Thanks

not sure if its the same thing but I've been playing with the TV part of the xmb, managed to make a youtube channel and an OPEN pStore chanel too, I dare say with a little editing you could get it running without the pkg files as you can unlock and watch quite a few channels in the xil file =]

Hmm, dunno, maybe... Could you give some help (or point to some threads I could peek at)?
Problem is, I wanted to update its software, so as to be able to decode newer MPEG4 standards. It doesn't have to do with "finding channels" but with "having the software to decode them", AFAIK. I had installed PlayTV from the DVD/blu-Ray that came with the device, but couln't update it "to get the latest software" (and with it, I guess, the necessary codecs) since I'd have to update my PS3 and "get on PSN" to do that... :-(
That's why I asked for the software, but if there's another way, I'd be happy to try it out. I just want the frickin' box to work like it was supposed to do... :-(
