Play backups w/o BR disc in drive?
Play backups w/o BR disc in drive? –
Hi. My first post and first thread, though I've been lurking here for a while (always best policy before joining up I find).
To give you the background. I had a colleague pick me up a 60GB PS3 in Dubai a few years back, only to get it home and find it was i) Russian/S.Africa region and ii) had a fried BluRay player... It was impossible to return it as my colleague had dumped the box at the airport to fit it in his luggage (he'd also bought an 80GB model for himself that he carried on the plane) and he'd lost the receipt and couldn't remember the name or address of the back-street electronics shop he'd bought them from.
Stuck with a dud I went out and bought a second PS3 from a local retailer (with guarantee!) on the day GTA IV was released and have continued to pick up games here and there, recently buying Red Dead Redemption and a couple of second hand ones (new PS3 game prices here in Turkey are crazy... US$115 on release!).
That's the background just to quell the masses before anyone jumps in with calls of piracy (just to stop it before it starts... I know how it rolls, I'm a moderator over at ipodtouchfans) and on with the question.
Can anyone give me a definitive answer if it would be:
- legal to back up on one PS3 and play from the HD on another in the same household - I'm presuming it would as I own the original discs;
- feasible to do this without a BR Disc in the drive (using PSGroove/PS Freedom) - I believe there's some security checks. Are these just for back-up or also for playing?
- if I need a disc in the drive is there any likelihood this check will be circumvented in the future?
Seems a shame to waste a perfectly 'good' 60GB PS3 when my son could have it in his room (the other one is mine ) and getting the BR Drive is not economically feasible.
Thanks in advance for responses.
Hi ! Vote in that poll ! http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66197 (NO BluRay Mode !)
I know someday it's gonna happen, it has to be.
I don't know when but im sure some guy will make some changes in psgroove or whatever
so we can finally enjoy the PS3 without BluRay Drive !(which is actually expensive and crappy quality drive)
Thanks for the input but it doesn't really answer my questions. I voted in your poll, though it's not going to change anything if it is fundamentally unfeasible... Also there's threads that talk about the BR disc being needed for back ups and for running games from XMB and the latter can be overcome using a 3rd party game boot prog....
I'm just a little confused as to the general situation with this and was looking for some clarity. If it can't be done then there's probably no point in me jailbreaking until more homebrew comes out and the scene develops as I'm happy running from original discs and updating to latest firmwares to keep PSN open on my main PS3 gaming machine.
I know what you sayin' but some dev on another forum told me it's feasible(technically), but not yet done...
Anythin' is possible when you got full access to the machine i guess.
Yes i also have another one which i update and use PSN but the other one is on a 2.50 FW and will stay that way
Good things comes to those who can wait.
And also i believe you gotta motivate some people before they do such thing, because many don't wanna do this because of piracy or whatever,
like mathieulh from psgroove, i think he doesn't want to involve himself into that, coz he thinks it will open doors to more piracy
But with that opensource stuff they did , they already opened doors...
I can't see how it opens the doors to piracy (not that piracy is within the realms of discussion on the forums here). I'm sure even the worst pirates have at least on original game disc or demo disc... This is more for those that don't want to keep discs in the BR drive or have a broken BR and can't afford to replace it...
Your assumptions are way off. You won't believe the amount of gamers that don't and will not have any legit retail games. I'm all for seeing a way for the gamers with broken Blu-Ray drives have a way to use the hack.
I'm sure even the worst pirates have at least on original game disc or demo disc...
These people shouldn't be forced to go out and buy another PS3 or even a replacement Blu-Ray drive either. Being able to use a BD-R/DVD-R would be also be a great option. However, this would allow those with no legit games(piracy) to relish by placing downloaded Jailbreak games onto an external or internal HDD.
