I am new to this but understand the concept and have a good knowledge base. I'm looking for the challenge of mastering this new level... I have been wanting to jailbreak my system for a while now and just want to know if it"s possible to keep my ability to play my games online and so forth... ANY info will be a big help...

also i'm running a slim 160gb version that gets updates every day due to my plus subscription... will this make a difference and how can i be sure that the jail break I'm going to use is the right one for my system. i do not want to turn my system into a paper weight because it is still pretty new. i just want to jail break it so that i can rip games and movies to my system as well as play emulators and in general take control of what belongs to me...

It's possible to still be on PSN with a CFW(Custom Firmware) PS3, but there is always a risk of your system/account getting banned.
First, see if you can downgrade your system to 3.55: SKU Models - PS3 Development Wiki. If you can't downgrade, look into the soon to be released Cobra ODE. It should work for any PS3.
After you downgrade, any CEX(retail) CFW will work for you.
You should disable automatic updates as it will put you back on OFW(Official Firmware) automatically removing any modifications.
