PL3 or Hermes? Which payload is better?
PL3 or Hermes? Which payload is better? –

We have time to make another poll including CE-X hybrid payload, but ths is about PL3 variants vs. Hermes variants. Please don't vote if you haven't tried both. Please vote from a user's perspective (taking into account game/homebrew compatibility and/or stability).
To me, Hermes v4b is the best, since I had stability problems with PL3.

Hermes as (AFAIK) PL3 does not feature patch mode.

I use PL3 because its constantly evolving with it being on github etc..
So thats what I think is better in that way.
I will say though that I find Hermes more stable at this point in time.
Make sure you butter the non reflective side of your CD's / DVD's and Blu-Rays so that when you drop them, they land butter side down thus preventing scratches.

As this whole topic is completely pointless, I'm going to give you a little heads up. You have stability issues with PL3 because you've ran Hermes. Hermes patch makes unnecessary permission changes to the internal hard drive, which in turn cause lockups when using PL3. If you've always used PL3 and never used Hermes once, you don't have the stability issues. Please, do a little research before trying to start a flame war.

I disagree the first payload I used was PL3, practically non of my games booted diskless, with hermes all but 2 do. Just because other people have had problems when using hermes first does not mean that this is the same occurence for everyone that has had problems with PL3, this imo is just a narrow minded viewpoint...
The Hermes payload does have better diskless compatibility period, this can be proven with the fact that kakaroto was beggin hermes to share information with him about aerialx and then spat his dummy out when Hermes told him where to go. Having said that if Hermes is no longer going to be updated i think we'll all have to jump on PL3 soon enough whether we like it or not.

For me hermes freezes a few times and the only thing i could do was pull the powercord out. The fist hex that came out for pic i played mgs, godw3 heavyrain without any problems. Still i want to say tanks to anyone that made hermes posible.

Current available payloads from PL3 are:-
1. Default (no peek & poke)
2. Dev (peek & poke)
3. No Unauth Syscalls (patch mode similar to Hermes)
4. Dump Elf (mainly for devs)
5. Tracer (mainly for devs)
Also, PL3 payloads offer multiple firmware versions such as 3.01, 3.10, 3.15, 3.30 and 3.41. Hermes (by itself) doesn't.
I have never had issues with either def/dev/NUS payloads offered from PL3 nor Hermes4B.
ALL games I have played have worked using any of the first 3 payloads above from PL3 and Hermes4B except for Nail'd which I could only play under the No Unauth Syscalls payload from PL3. Other users reported success with Hermes though.
None of them are a 100% working solution but the PL3 payloads continue to be worked on, whereas Hermes doesn't at the moment.
As Chesh has already stated, there are permissions issues when swapping from one payload to the other but are easily fixed.
So, whilst there is no 'best' payload, stick with whichever payload YOU prefer.
I have two dev boards so I keep one on Hermes4B and use the other for the def/dev/NUS payloads from PL3.
Cheers,
JonahUK.
Simple question which of the two gives you the most compatibility for running games diskless? I personally found PL3 horrible for this.

pl3 runs the same games discless. pl3 for me. i didnt like hermes patch mode. got sick of turning it on and off. pl3 no_auth plays all my games that needed patch mode without needing to patch.
the only reason hermes will win in the voting s because people are miss informed, dont know what there doing.

PL3 has many varients, hermes has none v2 v3 v4(problems) v4b(v4 fix) are not varients, dev nounauth def are varients, that fact that Kakaroto hasn't even made an official release because he is still working out the bugs (in fact still on the scene, where is Hermes again?)
