those coolpads do indeed help a little bit, but only if standing vertically and on a free place, as those models can heat up to 80° as default on both. i have made a heatsink modification myself on my cechl04 and now it only goes upto 33° max on cell and about 40° on rsx.

ok guys what about the thermal paste it says it reflows it or something Thermal Paste for Xbox 360 PS3 Rework Reflow Reball | eBay

"These compounds resist changes in consistency at temperatures up to 177oC (350oF), maintaining a positive heat sink seal to improve heat transfer from the electronic device to the heat sink or chassis, thereby, increasing the overall efficiency of the device"

Hmm, I don't think the PS3 would ever get hot enough to melt plastic without completely destroying the electronics and turning the system off, permanently. There must have been something else causing that.

I have a 60gb launch model and it might sound stupid but I took the top cover off cleaned everything on the inside and left the cover off. Now when I play games I put a small plastic fan inront of the intake and sit it up high for ventalation with a small ice pack on the power supply. its risky and sounds dumb because the precipitation to the power supply but I keep a watch and keep it clean and its been running fine now for years. Just have to be careful always having the top off as well

Mod the fan speed to push more air. Airflow makes noise. A quiet PS3 is silent death marching PS3.

I had chronic overheating problems with my last phat model until it finally YLOD on me. it was due to being in an enclosed cabinet with only small ventilation holes.

I just got my hands on a new phat and got a coolermaster 20cm 12v fan from the bargain bin at the local PC shop, cut a hole in the bottom of the cabinet and have it pushing the hot air out. the difference this has made is immense. The fan in the PS3 has never gone off the idle setting the whole time (it used to be flat out all the time prior to this mod - noisy as hell) and now it runs super cool and quiet.
