Every thing lately especially about Open managers and CFW becomes a argument about piracy and it becomes impossible to read anything actually relevant to the thread with out filtering through flame wars.

So if the mods are cool with it how about we contain all the debating on it to one thread and keep it out of the others.

Developers argument = putting peek and poke in CFW will encourage piracy

    Homebrew and pong are enough

    Other arguments

Not putting it in there hurts people who want back up managers for legit reasons

Pirates already have all they need with jailbreak anyways

piracy doesn't hurt gaming because people wouldn't buy it anyways

Debate and discuss all you want just please keep it out of the other threads.

Mods feel free to lock or delete this thread but I know these convos will just keep popping up in every other thread.

P.S. No view of mine is reflected in this thread this is just general what I have read in other threads

Personally, I couldn't care less about backup games. I just want to be able to have what I used to have back again, ie, the features I paid for when I bought the console.

The ability to play multiplayer, on PSN, of games I've legally bought. The ability to play new games. And the ability to run Ubuntu in OtherOS, without sacrificing the other features.

If returning OtherOS counts as homebrew, I'll vote for that.

That alone would be awesome stuff for me!

I dont care about piracy. Im indifferent to it. I just want to be able to backup the games i brought to the hard drive. Thats why I like the xbox you could dump a game to hard but the back thing was you needed the disc to start the game which defeats the point.
But i would like to see a homebrew app that will rip an disc to xmb. That way at lest people cant just download the game and install it

I think the CFW should include Peek & Poke. Sure it brings piracy, but it also opens the doors to new discoveries with newer firmware (if any).

Besides, someone will just edit the CFW and make Peek & Poke included. It's inevitable more or less.

It is indeed a shame all people care about (some, not all) is piracy. I will admit I do enjoy it, very much, but it is not what the hack was intended to do.

I voted for homebrew because the way the OP worded the other option is not my cup of tea. "no point if back up managers can not be used"

I think Sony should just open their console to allow people to create their own programs. How will they go about making sure games aren't pirated is beyond me.

I would say yes, those who are capable of doing it, should make a CFW which is able to load "backups". I say "backups", because I know most of the people will abuse it for piracy, of course, but thats a given, it will happen anyway.
The devs should still look at those guys who are realy using such a function for real backups.

Let's look at the past and at the work of those devs who are now saying "no it will only push piracy".
What about the whole Team Twiizer stuff ? They say they only care about Linux, so where is that nice Linux for the Wii ? The frist thing they created was the Homebrew Channel, which is fine ... the next thing they made was DVDX which in the end was used by others to enable disc based piracy trough software !
I'm pretty sure, that this wasn't exactly what they created it for, but what could they possibly do? It would have happend anyway.

KaKaRoTo's MFW ... where is the point of not having all these LV2 patches in this? I mean, he build PL3 from the ground up and was the first to create a mountpoint setting function which was meant to be legal, so it's in the users hand what to do with those mountpoints....why not do it again with a CFW ?
It should not be in his interest IF users are going to "abuse" this function for piracy, it's up to each and every single user.
So why putting it inside PL3, when he was the one to decide what to put in there ? He could have left it completly out of there in the first place

Let's look at Dark_Alex on the PSP front and all his CFW work. His intention with adding ISO support and 3 different drivers to load them, was definitly not to give software pirates an easy life.

So it should be realy in those devs interest to create such CFWs which are capable to load real backups of games, so that those guys who are realy buying all these games can keep them clean in their shelf to protect them from damage.

That's my view of this whole situation, I hope I'll not get flamed now by everyone

    Regards,
    iCEQB

I agree completely why punish people who will use it legit because some may or may not use it for piracy.

LOL @ one of the voters called: "xboxbman" normal he doesn't no backup managers on CFW
    he loves his xbucks.

Being able to backup an original game disc could always be helpful !
No matter if piracy is involved or not, i mean you are responsible for what you do.
If you get caught somehow in the pirate's ship drowning in some public trackers crap...
(don't use them it's bad ! better use your brain instead )
It's your problem not the CFW maker's fault !

As it has been stated time and time again before, if you don't wanna invite piracy to the table. Don't hack the system, I know the system was hacked because of OtherOS being removed but Sony i figure removed it to stop anyone malipulating the system which in turn would open a door that could let piracy in.

Now the hackers have completed their goal, OtherOS will make a return so Sony are now sitting in their bitch-cave's trying to figure out ways to close these epic failure security exploits (Good luck on that one by the way boys!) and in the highly unlikely event they do succeed what will happen, team 0verlord & captain Geo will come back fighting faster, better, stronger and the cycle repeats! - Its a vicious circle!

The pirates haven't hit ground yet on this new modified/custom no-dongle-needed malarky, but they most certainly will.

a knife can be used for something good or bad, same with backup managers... its really not great to have to worry about the laser going bad all the time -.- especially if you own one of the older models. ps2 died the same way, lens ruined, and ofc even if u r willing to repair it, your told its not worth it cuz sony doesnt even make it easy, instead you need to go buy a new console...
