real weird thing just happened to me.

I knew from looking at the system info that I had about 100gb left. I transferred about 90gb worth of games.. and then I started getting the "less than 500mb left" warning. I hadn't actually played any of the games yet so it's not like they installed additional content on the HD.

Then.. instead of using multiman to go and delete a game (which I realize is what I should have done), I used blackbox ftp to delete the folder of a 30gb game (uncharted 2). I saw the ftp delete 372 files in front of my eyes. Most of them were listed as being 450kb but I think that's an anomaly with FTPing and due to the ps3 filesystem being weird.. we don't see the actual filesizes via ftp (or the timestamps) ... right ?

So anyway.. I reboot on the ps3 a couple of times.. and it still says less than 500mb left!! wtf ? So then I used multiman to delete another 10gb game and this time it freed up the space immediately.

Any idea what's going on here? How do I can recuperate that lost space? Or is it possible that the PS3 kept trying to upload files even though it had run out of space.. and it created a bunch of dummy files instead of the real files? And that's why when I deleted Uncharted 2 nothing seemed to happen space-wise ? Just a theory.. trying to understand this.

    Thanks for your time..

Install Comgeine's awesome file manager, and use it to look around your hdd, just be careful, that program will let you delete any thing!

i found this issue when the jailbreak first existed. appearantly it still exists. it doesnt seem to be specific to the backup manager used.

for some reason, there is a bug that occurs where you delete data inside the backup manager or FTP software and the ps3 does not report the change.

i deleted every game on my hard drive before and the ps3 never once changed the remaining space. i was unable to copy over any files to the ps3 because the ps3 thought it was full, and obviously i had nothing left to delete.

the only solution for me was to reformat the hdd and start fresh, where ive never seen the issue again.

this was an issue that occured while using games on the internal drive, and not an external one.
PIC based jailbreakers please visit my thread below and please READ. I have spent a few hours now trying to explain everythign as best I can here. You will also find my latest HEX releases there as well.

    Run ScanDisk. Oh wait...

In PS3 recovery/safe mode there is Rebuild System Database, it should fix it.

Recovery/Safe mode will fix it. And you can keep the games you want, instead of having to resort to a format.
