    Help,

I bought my PS3 ages ago waiting for just this day to be able to do virtually everything I've been doing on my Xbox360 and not with simply adding an external hdd. Questions:

    1) I know NOT to upgrade past 3.55, but my unit is so old. Do I need to incrementally upgrade or just FAT32 this USB and go?
    2) There are so many CFW's and I see Geohot's jailbreak. What do these CFW's give me over just the vanilla Geohot jailbreak?
    3) I see at least 3 backup managers. Is it just personal preference or can I install all 3 like Rogero, Gaia and Multiman. Recommended to install all or just one?
    4) The BIGGEST question is how do I keep a kid from upgrading my PS3 once I jailbreak it? I've kept it at this firmware so long by NOT letting it be played online.

    Thanks everyone,
    BadB0y

Yes, download OFW 3.55 from ps3-hacks.com download section and upgrade to 3.55 through USB, you do not need to incrementally update. Once you are at 3.55 OFW then you can update to a 3.55 CFW, just look for a tutorial.

    2) There are so many CFW's and I see Geohot's jailbreak. What do these CFW's give me over just the vanilla Geohot jailbreak?

Kmeaw is popular and a lot less reports of bricking from users so it's considered safer.

    3) I see at least 3 backup managers. Is it just personal preference or can I install all 3 like Rogero, Gaia and Multiman. Recommended to install all or just one?

Multiman has the most features but if you want something simple to play backups and act as an FTP server then go with Rogero. You can install both and decide if you want both or just one. I used Rogero forever and just recently started using Multiman. I recommend learning Multiman. But use Rogero for it's simplicity.

    4) The BIGGEST question is how do I keep a kid from upgrading my PS3 once I jailbreak it? I've kept it at this firmware so long by NOT letting it be played online.

Do not sign up for playstation network, you can connect to the internet though. If you are really worried then disable your internet connection on the PS3.

    Good luck!!

Just make sure you create the correct directories on the root of a FAT32 formatted USB stick for the update file. If I remember correctly, I think it needs to look like this but double check:

if your usb drive is the X: on your PC then... X:\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP (make sure you check a tutorial before doing anything on your PS3 and make sure it is a legit source, meaning a forum mod would recommend it too)

the PS3 is programmed to look for a certain directory when you update firmware through USB

Also dont forget to erase the update files from your back ups(the PS3_UPDATE folder) . If the game require a 3.56+ FW and is inside the game it will update your system (don't forget to apply the proper fixes too)....and you can explain and show to your kids that if the system is updated to 3.56+ the fun is all over because no more shitload of games and emulators. why can't they understand it?

If you dont use the mediaserver just disconnect the internet cable, but if you do use it alot, you can use your router to block the addresses of sony (dont remember right now but just search them) or in the ps3 you can just put a wrong dns address to not connect to internet and stay inside the local network. I guess you will not miss the shitty web browser of the ps3, man that shit can't do nothing...

Yes. Inside the folder is a PS3UPDAT.PUP (A FIRMWARE UPDATE) that could be old OR A 3.56+. I have hear some fellows with kids that they didn't erase that files and the kid wanted to play a new game (maybe without the proper fix) and boom, they update the system even with no internet connection...so just delete them, they are dead weight anyway.

the recent games (playable of CFW) are the ones you have to take care most. If you use multiman let it change the param.sfo (DONT WORRY ABOUT IT IS NOT A SYSTEM UPDATE) and you are ready to go if you apply the fix. Just search the games you can play and get use with the terminology and you will be pro in a matter of days. remember some new game dont work (and wont without a new CFW or the 3.60 keys) and even old game dont work without "fixes".

Look at this 3.66 version spoofer. The program was made specifically to prevent your PS3 from prompting a user to update.

    I have a diferent opinion...

If you want to jailbreak your ps3, i think is a good option HERMES 3.41 FW.

That firmware could allows you to use the incoming COBRA features to play ps1 and ps2 from others regions(search for more info)

I guess you have a fat backward compatible.

The best manager is HMANAGER (from Hermes too), easy for kids to play, and you can add multiman.

If you go to 3.55 and a new 3.41 feature appears, you have to downgrade and could loose BD playback(please correct me if im wrong)

If you want to go to 3.55 , is not problem to try 3.41cfw before.

ALTERNATIVE: In both FW you can install REBUG CFW, using its options to erase the internet icons to prevent kids to update.

In 3.55 you can use IRIS MANAGER (a 3.55 port of Hmanager).

3.41 is what I suggest you.

    Sorry for my english.

    SALUDOS!!!
