I bought a YLOD PS3 with the intent to fix it... just because I like messing around with hardware... plus it came with Red Dead Redemption stuck inside it.

Got the console apart, did the reflow and fixed the YLOD. PS3 booted up fine last night but insisted I needed to format the HDD. I figured that was prolly normal as I'd taken it out and disconnected the battery. I let it do that, watched it boot into the XMB and then properly shut it down for the night as it was late.

Went to turn it on today... and I have an odd problem. This is exactly what happens (it's a 60GB backwards compatiable FAT PS3):

    1. Turn on the PS3 at the back.
    2. Red light comes on to indicate it's in standby.
    3. Press the power button, PS3 beeps once.
    4. Green light comes on.
    5. 1-2 seconds later, the entire system shuts down, no blinking lights at all.

I have to unplug it and walk away for a while before trying to turn it on again. However, trying to turn it on yields exactly the same problem. I'm guessing overheating as I don't hear the fan start up when the PS3 does (which is odd as it did last night).

Anyone got any ideas? So far I've tried a different power cable (just in-case), disconnecting the HDD and a completely seperate power socket to the TV.

Alright, try doing a hard reset on your PS3. This is done by switching on the power switch on the back of you PS3 and then holding the power button (on the front) until your PS3 makes 3 beeps. Assuming it was some software related error, this should boot up to the initial set up.

If you still feel it is a hardware fault (i.e. related to the fan), then you would have to open your PS3 again. I'm not too good with hardware but try checking if the fan is actually receiving power when you turn your PS3 on. If it is and isn't working, then you might have to consider buying a new fan (you could probably get a cheap one off eBay or something :P)

    Nice thought but didn't work.

It's turning off almost instantly after pressing the power button, even if I keep my finger on it.

maybe one of your points were not soldered properly, it got cold last night after you went to bed, and snapped one of the points.

you should look really closely at your work and double check it. was it really cold at your house last night?

    Hm... that's a good idea.

Yeah, the temperature dropped cos the UK was being smacked with storms last night... and the goddamn boiler decided to turn itself off in the middle of the night. >_< So the living room was sodding FREEZING when I woke up!

I might give it a blast with the heat gun and see if that helps. I'll also check the fan connection.

    Got it!

One of the screws holding the lid on seems to be causing a short. I found that out by booting up the PS3 without it's top on or BD-Drive connected and it worked. Reconnected the drive and it still worked... so I started putting screws back in while it was turned on. One of them caused it to turn off.

I've left that out and it's been running fine for about 50 mins.
