Noob here.. a bit overwhelmed with all the information!

So, I picked up a fat 60gb with backwards compatibility and firmware 3.01 is on it. I found tons of info on 3.55 CFW and assumed that was the only way to go for using backups. Reading on, I see other versions of CFW at higher firmware versions.. 3.56, 4.21, 4.30 etc.
Rebug 4.21 caught my eye, but I can't find a tutorial that explains what exactly to do. I want to update to 3.55, install rebug 3.55.3 to enable the QA flag followed by updating to 4.21 rebug..
Then I see the terminology CEX, DEX, and REX. How do you know what your console is on? I can only find REX rebug firmware, and from what I read if you're not using REX on your console you'll brick?
Anyone care to shed some light how I can get from where I am to 4.21 Rebug without bricking? Also, maybe a quick explanation of what CEX, DEX and REX means?
Thanks in advance!

You say you're on 3.55 CFW right now? Here's what you do
1) QA Flag your console (plenty of info out there on how to do it - it's a very important step. don't skip it)
2) install 3.55 official from recovery menu
3) install 4.21 Rebug from recovery
That's it. Once you're done with that install Rebug Toolbox from your install pkg menu and set for rebug mode

Or, if you'd prefer Rogero (what some say is the new kmeaw) 4.30 with PSN access out of box,
1. QA flag
2. Update to 3.55 via recovery menu + USB drive
3. Install Rogero 3.55 CFW via recovery menu
4. Install Rogero 4.30 CFW via recovery menu
Multiman works, PSN works, I have everything I need!

You failed to tell him that the first versions of Rogero's firmware that are still floating around caused bricks on slims, and a later version still floating around caused bricks on phats. If you're going to suggest Rogero to someone please give at the very least a version number or a link to a working one
Besides everything works just as well if not better on Rebug 4.21 - plus 0 reports of bricks

Thanks for the quick info/replies!
I am currently not on CFW, I decided to not do anything with the console until I got everything straight. My console is currently on OFW 3.01.
For CFW, I plan on using Rebug, though the only thing I come across is 3.55.3 (I need for the QA flag) and 4.21 REX version..
I'm still confused to the whole rex, dex, cex situation, and am afraid of somehow bricking through updates.. are the REX versions of Rebug the correct versions for me?
So as I understand it:
Update 3.01 -> 3.55 OFW
Update 3.55 OFW -> 3.55.3 Rebug REX
Enable QA tag
Update 3.55.3 Rebug REX -> 3.55 OFW
Update 3.55 OFW -> 4.21 Rebug REX
Thanks again.

Yeah, looks like you've got it. I'd suggest doing all updates from recovery menu as a safety precaution and after enabling QA flagging, double check that you see a star symbol in your update menu in the XMB.
After you're on 4.21 REX you'll have to look in your install pkg menu for Rebug toolbox and install that, then run it. Look in there for an option to set for Rebug mode. When you go back to the XMB look in your system settings. It should say you're on 4.31. If it does you're all set

I think if you DO go through the recovery mode install, id suggest taking out the bluray disc in your PS3, supposedly it will default to that first over anything else.

Yes make sure you take your disc out before updating in recovery menu. It will always check your bluray drive before checking your USB drive. If your disc has 3.56 or higher you're screwed and after qa flagging it can even downgrade to as far as the system version that your PS3 shipped with from the factory. Mine can go down as low as 2.3 I believe. I occasionally forget to take my disc out - that's why I leave Final Fantasy XIII in there. It has 3.15 on it. The worst that would happen to me is I have to go back to 3.55 and go from there.

About the QA Flag? Do we simply install a PKG to be able to have this ability? Or do we changes some system files?
I found a package that seems to do it, but not sure if you guys are using the same one?
Code:

PS3: Slim 320GB / CFW KMEAW 3.55 / multiMAN v04.xx.xx / blackb0x FTP Server v1.2 3.55 w/ FlashFXP 4.2.x
PS2: SLIM & PHAT / FreeMcBOOT w/ESR & OPL 9-r651 / SMS w/PSClient v1.3.1
PSP: PHAT / 5.00 M33-6
