New to PS3 and modding, what options are available
I just purchased a slim ps3 which has 3.66 firmware on it. From what I have read, the only option is to use the E3 flasher, for whatever modding I want to do. There also seems to be something for 4.00 from kakaroto but that seems a while out.
So what I am curious about, is, is it worth it to get the E3 Flasher currently? Or wait it out. My main purpose for wanting to mod is to play my games without the cd. Coming from mostly computer gaming it's very handy to me to use something like daemon tools to load my game rather than having to get the disc every time. I also like the idea of dual booting (OtherOS?). What possibilities are available for this? is it PS3 and Linux completely separate from each other with nothing to do with the other? I ask because I have seen a couple vids on youtube which had the game in a window with other stuff running in the background. I think it was something to do with mapping keyboard keys to a game for playing computer style. Which would be cool as well. I also like the idea of home brew stuff as well but i'm not as turned on by that as much. I think it would be cool to be able to use the ps3 as a media center of sorts for my house such as recording things like a dvr (saw it mentioned somewhere, don't remember where, or if was only speculation or if it's even possible).
I have also read about swapping harddrives (al la E3 Flasheer?) so that I have one on official to play my games on line, and the other for all the modding junk.
So I have read a few dozen posts and I am starting to see whats possible, I think. But I am curious on what people can do to the PS3, and what options are available that I'm on OFW 3.66. Thanks.
