I have a ps3 slim 120gb that is on 4.21 regero and I am thinking of getting a bigger hard drive and i saw this.

Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s with NCQ Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive

Think it is a good deal and do I just repalce the drive on the ps3 or do I need to do anything special since it is on 4.21 cfw?

you have to downgrade back to 3.55 use the 999 downgrader, you may need to get more info on how to change hard drives on 4.21 cfw, also i personally wouldn't touch segate hard drives with a barge pole, it's cheap for a reason, get western digital or samsung drives, they may be more expensive but your data won't be so much at risk with those brands.

As my dad says, opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one. I wouldn't quite say that Seagates are that bad of an HD. Most people i have ever spoken to either recommend that or WD. I for one do prefer Western digital, but I had done an extensive amount of reading on this bout two years ago when I picked up my first dongle and was looking to bump up my space. Reason I had went with Seagate is because the at the time a lot of JB ps3 owners were reporting that the WD blue scorpio series was having major stuttering issues when playing games on the ps3. I am sure that their are other WD drives without that problem though. From what i was reading it was recommending that any ps3 should be using a SATA drive with a SATA1 mode speed. Not sure if their is any validity to that or not but I had taken someone recommendation on this site and used a small jumper on my drive that forces it into SATA1.

Seagates are also a great drive. I can honestly say I have had zero problems with mine (that werent brought on by my own experimentation). I have the 750 gb momentus model. Mine is still going strong 2 years on my JB system.
As far as I know, my ps3 has never had an undetected error.

Actually I have a WD internal 500gb and 2 seagate externals, they work fine. I have heard however WD externals can have problems being detected on ps3.

It's typically just safer to downgrade to OFW before doing anything like swapping hard drives, changing firmware versions, etc.

It usually trys to rebuild the database and recover what the system looked like from the previous version. Since all the CFW stuff is modded I think it would be safer to go back to 3.55 ofw for a fresh install and then update and recover. You never know what kind of bugs you can run into down the line.

I have the 750 Gb WD Blue Caviar. it was $75 2 years ago.
I personally have had issue with anything over 500 gb, when ever I tried to correct the files system it would freak out and try to format, is that why you are stay at the 500 gb mark?

Also, I thought it desn't make a difference when you are looking at the tech speeds of the HD, cus the PS3 was designed to run at 5400rpm, please correct me if i am wrong.

Wow. its funny that you say that. I too have had the same problem with restoring files. My ps3 WILL NOT do it without formatting. I am on a 750 GB internal. I had a hunch it was something to do with being such a large drive. I wonder why though?
