NEW PS3 cant use PSnetwork without update

Brand new ps3 on firmware 3.30 upgraded to 3.41 to use my JB dongle

But I cant use the PS3 network are access the shop because its still asking me to update online before I register.

Am I right in thinking as soon as I update online to get access to the ps network its gonna upgrade to 3.50 and spoil my homebrew (JB)

please help im totally new at this
