My slim's (250 GB)s' internal is getting somewhat low (< 100GB), I think it's about time for a larger one. I do have plenty (I think) music (~20+ GB), trailers/"how it was made" (Dev Diary), and since i'm collecting a small collection of blu-ray (weather they use BD-live or not).

Other notes: I do have 3.55 (K) . . . when I start netflix it tells me "system software of your PS3 system is 3.55. To start you must update to 3.56 or later . . ." & I seemed to have gotten a icon under music for the Qriocity service.

Suggestions for a larger drive, and (doubtful) if it would cause problems.

Oh, well then, depends on the size you want to go. 750gb is the max 9.3mm (native size) HDD you can get. I've read that 7200RPM drives can cause YLOD, but it was a mixed study of users here. I've read from other users that 7200RPM drives run just fine. I personally got a 5400RPM drive just to make sure my old phatty doesn't have any reason to croak on me. Stuttering has been reported on most of the green series (eco friendly) of drives, so I'd stay away from them.

BTW: There is a mod to get the bigger drives (12.2mm) fit into the PS3 with some modifications to the case, and I've also seen users using a esata to sata cable to connect an external enclosure to the internal drive slot. Hopefully that answers your questions.

I just went out and got a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB, 5400 RPM, 8 MB cache (WD5000BEVT) which does NOT use the advanced formatting that causes stuttering in the PS3. So far everything has been great with it (including MLB11 The Show, Killzone 2/3, Uncharted).

    Oh yeah, it's in a slim 2501A.

Doubtful, when when I do put it in, would it ask for 3.55 or 3.56 or 3.6 . . .?

It shouldn't. IIRC it just formats the drive, and you are good to go! Just because the FW is not on the HDD but is stored in the PS3 NAND/NOR.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, been a while since i've swapped a HDD in a PS3.

So? Check your system version. If it says 3.55, then you'll be fine.

Btw: if you have a slim, you'll need your current firmware on a thumbdrive. If you got a phat, it'll just format and away you go.

Be sure you know which fat console you have. I'm not certain which ones save the firmware and which ones don't, but with my fat console I needed to back up my firmware. I switched from CFW KMEAW 3.55 to OFW 3.55 prior to changing my hard drive, and loaded OFW 3.55 back on. Then changed back to KMEAW 3.55 once the hard drive was formatted by the playstation. Didn't want to take any chances with loading the CFW from the beginning as I read mixed reviews about it's success rate.
