    Changing the HD on a non-slim 60GB model with a 640GB Momentus.

    3.55OFW -> Kmeaw 3.55CFW -> 3.55OFW -> Installed new HD

    The drive seems to be working. It boots up and I can install game data. When I go to the Recovery Menu and choose Restore File System it reports "An error occurred during the restore operation. The hard disk must be formatted." I chose Yes, but if I do it again it reports the same thing and I must reformat again. I did a full format (about 36 hours) the same thing occurs.

    Some people will say just do not restore the file system, but that is not an option. When you install kmeaw 3.55 and you ftp back your save data and trophies, as I have successfully done with the 60GB original, you have to restore the file system and database in the Recovery Menu. So I cannot restore my profiles' files with the new HD.

    I put back the original Sony 60GB Momentus and did the same thing and it works fine. Installed the new 640GB again and the error occurs still.

    Is this HD DOA?

    Why did you revert back to OFW from Kmeaw just to put the new HDD in?
    You didn't need to do that.

    Although I doubt that's what is causing the issue.
    If your HDD is working (play a few games, let it idle for a few hours) and the only thing you cannot do is Restore File System, then it sounds like there's an issue with your PS3, or the CFW.

    DOA = dead on arrival.
    It's not dead if you can install game data.

    I reverted back to the Sony firmware prior, to rule out any problems if they were to occur, just in case. I do not have kmeaw cfw installed currently.

    If it was the PS3 wouldn't the original HD not be able to do the Restore File System option.

    When I said DOA... Some HDs I bought had installed Windows and booted, but after a little while started to corrupt files and eventually died.

    Run SeaTools when in doubt.

    Recently I found a SATA cable was causing problems instead of the drive hooked up to it (Just saying, it obviously shouldn't be a problem in this case).

    Did you know over 20 percent of the drives returned to Seagate for repair are actually found to be healthy?
    Have you tried to use it in SATA150 mode?

    Well I tried the jumper for 1.5 and that didn't work. I will test it in another PS3 that has never had JB or MFW before I return it.

    I would like to know if anyone has added a new HD after they have JB and/or used kmeaw's firmware. Can you Restore File System in recovery menu successfully?

    I switched out my hard drive yesterday with a WD 750gb while on 3.55 kmeaw and was taken to service/recovery mode right away, no OS access. The screen says to try a reboot (didn't work) or insert media with v3.55 or greater firmware. I am on a slim CECH2101B

    I then put the OFW v3.55 in USB and select+start as I was instructed onscreen and re-flashed OFM and it also formatted drive. All good back to v3.55 and HD showing--OS using 70+gb Then I put the ps3 into recovery mode to update to CFW kmeaw. All is good.

    Before adding the new hard drive I backed up the home folder with FTP, then used the PS3 backup utility to do its thing (about 2-3 hours around 87gb.) I then restored with the PS3 utility backup (another 2-3 hours) and all homebrew and games on the internal hard drive were still in place and everything is still working. First thing I wanted to try was my purchased (when I was on 3.50) DLC RDR Undead Nightmare. Launched the original disc and picked single player RDR UDN and it asks to log into PSN. DNS hack is working so I use that to log in and re-activate well that didn't work. So I go into the PSN network and pick RDR UN and it says I already own this. Cool,...no. I try to re-download and get error code (didn't write it down.) No idea what to do to get that doing. Luckily the BluRay RDR UDN is working and still used my save, also updated to 1.02! Backedup games tested with latest multiman I didn't use the lv2 patch.

    @phunky

    Can you go to the Recovery Menu and try Restore File System? This will help me out a lot!

    I tried the HD in a Slim PS3 and FW 3.56 does not let you upgrade the HD. It returns a corrupted error. Sony has either mucked up or did that on purpose.

    Hey there, I am having this exact same problem right now. Although in my case I can usually be good for a few weeks before I get the corrupt HDD message. It always happens when I first turn on my PS3, very frustrating. I have already gone through this 3 different times since Christmas, each time I lost many backups I stored on my new 640 GB internal HDD. I am thinking about giving up on this hard drive and replacing it with another, but does anyone have any suggestions before I go that route? I would hate to have to wait for the new one to come in before I get back in business (we got this one from Newegg). The only thing I can think of is I may have created too many permissions issues on my hard drive from the multiple times switching payloads, etc. I never really run the permissions fix deal and have gone from JB to Waninkoko to kmeaw currently. Anyone know what could be the problem?

    Thanks guys

    Dunno if this helps, but this is what I did and I've had no problems on my PS3 FAT

    • Was running 3.41 USB Break;
    • Upgraded to OFW 3.55;
    • Backed up HDD;
    • Swapped HDD;
    • Formatted HD and reinstalled OFW 3.55;
    • Installed CFW 3.55;
    • Restored HDD from backup.

    All works great this side. Don't know if this helps or not?
