Netflix disc-free app this Monday
Netflix disc-free app this Monday –
Article here: Netflix on PS3: Disc-free Next Week – PlayStation Blog
We're finally getting Netflix in the XMB. I have two PS3s, one of them I have left on 3.41, and the other one I update. The question will be, will we be able to use a PKG installer to put this app on our 3.41 or earlier FW? I am hoping so. I guess we will see. I would like to see any reports/progress posted here on Monday once this hits.
The disc will probably continue to work, but the new app is also going to support 1080p on some titles, and 5.1 dolby digital plus sound. Hopefully they are not building any system version check into this thing. There's hope for that, since it will be a standalone app download, not part of a new firmware.
About freakin time. Too bad I've only got the one JB PS3. Theres no chance in hell I'm connecting it to the internet now lol. Oh well, I havent really watched netflix on the PS3 in quite awhile so not too big of a deal anymore to me.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to this app too. I've got 2 PS3s and I was considering updating my 2nd one due to this news. I don't really need to have 2 consoles to JB, especially since my MGS4 model is only 40GB.
I don't see why not. Just delete any saved PSN login information. I keep mine connected and can still use Netflix. Sony can't do anything if you aren't logging into PSN. Remember that you are only bound to their TOS for logging into PSN.

This is what their EULA says,
Section 3. Services and Updates:
"Some services may be provided automatically without notice when you are online (Im assuming this means anytime it has an IP address to the real world), and others may be available to you through SCE's online network or authorized channels (Im assuming this means their PSN, etc). Without limitation, services may include the provision of the latest update or download of new release that may include security patches, new technology or revised settings and features which may prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content, or use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with the PS3™ system.
Additionally, you may not be able to view your own content if it includes or displays content that is protected by authentication technology. Some services may change your current settings, cause a loss of data or content, or cause some loss of functionality. It is recommended that you regularly back up any data on the hard disk that is of a type that can be backed up."
I do agree that it may be perfectly safe, but... lol. It's that "but" that keeps me from taking a chance.
not gonna happen. It was released here in Canada a few weeks ago, and the app itself can be installed as a pkg but once started, it requires firmwares 3.42 or ejects you back to XMB.
So it's not PSN dependant, but it does require 3.42 to work. I got it working on a 3.42 ps3 (not 3.50) which wasnt connected to PSN.
Sorry to burst your bubbles!
What they *can* do and what they *should* do (not in a morality sense, but in a business sense) are rather different. So Sony rolls out a mandatory update for everybody that stayed on 3.15 (like the US Airforce, for example) for otherOS? What about when an update bricks consoles? What happens if the user didn't initiate the update and it's Sony's fault? What if I bought my PS3 to hook up to my home network as a media-center, without any intention of using it's true internet capabilities?

I didn't want to start a new thread so...Does anybody know if the disc-based netflix app on PS3 is no longer going to function? Are they going to phase it out to push people to get the app? Can the app be downloaded with the PSN Download workaround (that doesn't quite work because of licensing if I recall correctly)? From what I gather it just appears on the video tab and when you select it it downloads/installs, rather then downloading it from the PSN store. I rarely use my netflix streaming these days anyways, but it would be a lot more convenient to just have the app.
Anyone have any luck getting this to work on 3.41?
does anybody have a copy of the netflix app that was just released today?
