Need help deciding which firmware to upgrade to!
Need help deciding which firmware to upgrade to! –

I'm currently using Kmeaw 3.55 and have liked it so far except for the fact that I have to use custom eBoots for any of the newer games. With Multiman's 5.x upcoming release no longer supporting the 3.55 version, I figure it's time to update.
All I'd really like the ability to do is be able to play ALL my games from my hard drive without having to use a game dvd (DISCLESS). I've got a functioning DVD drive, but I'm trying to avoid using it to prevent it from getting any damage from long term usage. From what I understand, the only way to accomplish this, is by using a Rebug firmware. I of course don't need all the options that Rebug offers, but I don't mind if that's my only choice. From what I've researched, Rogera's 4.30 firmware would be ideal, but it doesn't support DISCLESS use (except for a small handful of games). Is there a feature to do this with either Multiman or Iris?
Let me know what you guys would recommend! All feedback welcome.

I don't think Rebug supports games 100% discless, unless you are talking about the BD emulator in DEX mode. Just update to either Rebug or Rogero. I don't think you have to worry about burning out your Blu-ray if you are using back ups. There is very little (if any) laser usage when using back ups from the hard drive.

Really? My PS3 slim seems to make quite a bit of noise when I have a game disc inserted. Also when I eject the disc, it feels quite warm to the touch (maybe that's just from the internal heat though). I always assumed both of these reasons was from the disc spinning constantly. I only use backups from my internal hard drive and do not play any from disc.

Just went through this ordeal myself. I went from Kmeaw 3.55 to Rogero CFW 4.30 v2.5.
If you're going to do it, just get it out of the way. What I found was that most of the links to the original eboots and param.sfo's on these forums are now dead or outdated, so I had a bitch of a time finding the ones I needed. In the end, I found I had to re-acquire them from full game downloads from other sources.
Two that I couldn't get working right were: Dead Rising 2 (EU) and Ace Combat Assault Horizon (EU). I'm trying to track down good full downloads of these to try again.
Most of the games I had with cracked eboots were easy enough to find though, and some didn't even need to be fixed because they were cracked using the 3.40 keys, not the 3.55 keys.
The worst part was trying to find fixes for the cracked PSN games I had. I just gave up ona few, and trying to resign them myself proved useless. Too many bad/conflicting instructions on how to do that.
The upgrade itself went just fine though. Here's the process I used:
Boot into recovery mode and reflash over Kmeaw with Rogero 3.55 v. 3.7
install and run Q&A flags app.
Install Rogero 4.30 CFW v.2.5 right from the XMB.
ran multiman and started Dev_Blind to replace the cheesy Rogero Coldboot logo wiht the original PS3 one. (this is optional, but I hate when there's crappy scene advertising on my consoles.)

The disc may spin, but I don't see how the laser would be in use. The laser is usually what fails from use, not the spin motor.

Can't I install a QA Flag pkg on my current Kmeaw and go straight to Rogero 4.30 CFW v.2.5?

Good to know. I was wondering about that.

When I tried to install QA flag on Kmeaw it locked up the ps3 the first time, so I didnt want to chance it.

That happened to me once. Worked the second time.

Ok, so I've officially updated to Rogero 4.30. It looks good and I'm glad it's done. Moving away from the 3.55 Eboots back to original wont be a problem as I have all the original games. However, I just purchased a 1TB hard drive and formatted to FAT32. When I replaced my old one (250GB), it's now prompting me with the following message:
"The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try and to restart the system. If the system will not restart, the system partition of the Hard disk must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software. Insert storage media that contains the update data of version 4.30 or later and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time. For information on how to obtain the update data, refer to the SCE website for your region."
Can I just put the USB thumb drive containing the Rogero 4.30 update back in the PS3 and follow the steps? Is this ok, or am I going to mess something up? This is the paranoid part of me talking.

You should of downloaded and installed Rebug's 4.30 CFW, not Rogero's. Rebug is usually more stable. Only reason Rogero is the most used is because it was the first 4.21 and people seem to think it is the next Kmeaw.
