Need advice on new Ps3 Purchase –

Dear All,
I have a PS3/Fat on OFW 3.60, connected to the net, etc, doing everything I want it to do and just venturing into the situation were I require this forum and/or advice.
I've got approx $250 and looking to buy a 2nd ps3 that will not be online and only used now and again for other purposes, my question is :-
What OFW should I be looking for on the 2nd hand ps3, should I be looking for a fat or slim, any particular HDD (that can be upgrade later), etc
All tips are appreciated as I don't want to end up with a $250 brick (i.e not able to change anything). I'm open to using Amazon, Ebay, Craiglists, Gamestop, etc
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Regards

Hi Peejaygee,
$250 should be plenty to be able to get another ps3 for your homebrew needs. I've purchased second-hand ps3s from ebay for less than $200 that worked without any issues. You need to find a ps3 that comes with firmware 3.55 or less. If it is on firmware 3.56 or 3.60, you will not be able to install custom firmware or enable any homebrew features on it.
I would honestly look for a ps3 slim. When searching on ebay for the older ps3 fat models, there is always a chance you're going to get a seller who fixed a YLOD ps3, and won't let you know that. In that case in a few months to a year it will get that problem again, and you'll be stuck with needing to repair it again.
Amazon runs deals every now and than where you can get a brand new ps3 slim on sale. About a month ago I got a brand new slim for $220 after rebate. You could be waiting forever on that, so I'd just check out eBay and Craigslist and look around for a slim model. Just ensure that the ps3 is on 3.55 or lower firmware before you buy it.
As for hard drives, the ps3 can take the majority of 2.5' internal hard drives. There the same hard drives used in laptops. Stick to a 750gb or 640gb 2.5 inch drive or smaller. You can use the 1 TB drives, but it involves some modification of the drive cage. And honestly, I have a 640gb internal that I found for $50, and its way more space than I will ever need. If your going to download 100s of ps3 games and put them on your hard drive, than maybe you will need a bigger drive. I buy a new game every 2 or 3 months, and don't download any, so my drive doesn't get filled up.
When you do get your new ps3, there are some good tutorials in this forum for installing Kmeaw's MFW or the newest version of rebug. It's just a matter of installing the modified firmware, installing BDEMU.pkg, installing MultiMan, and start backing up your first game. It's real simple and easy to do.
Hope ya enjoy yourself.
