IS MY PS3 BREAKING? –
12-20-2012,12:35 AM
to start if off i have a ps3 slim. it was 250gb and i replaced the drive with a 500gb western digital. i have been hearing a weird grinding noise in my ps3. it is not constant in the sense i turn my ps3 and hear this noise until i turn it off. it has several times. i could be my ps3 it and then the grinding noise for a about a second or two and then it goes away. at first i thought it was my hard drive but my system at the moment it happened did not freeze and it happend several times in an hour. it made me think it is possibly my blu ray drive but i never play any games straight from the disk. there is a disk in there just so i dont have to do app home but in my understanding the blu ray stops spinning on the inside once you start the game from the backup manager. so my question is could be my hard drive or my blu ray drive is going.?
p.s. my system has never been opened since purchase. it still has warranty sticker on the bottom

no. my origanal drive was fine. i shoud have put in my post that i upgraded my drive instead of replacing it. i put in the new hard drive about a about a year ago. the noises started ocurring about a week ago. i first noticed it when i turned on my ps3. it would start up like normal and then i would hear a a grinding noise but it would only make the noise for about a second. i wish i had so i can record the noise but unfortunately i dont. fortunately if it is my hard drive i still have my original one but i am more worried if it is my blu ray drive. i have never opened my ps3 and i dont how to replace a drive at all.

It's probably just the hard drive.. Some just make random noises like that when seeking. As for the disc stopping after you select it in mm? No it actually starts spinning it for a good couple minutes and then stops.

thats what i thought about the disk. then it is probably my hard drive. i will probably wait a little longer to swap it with my old one to see. it sucks though since the hard drive is 500 gigs and the other one i have is 250. aw well. just in cae i already backed up my saves in case it decides to take a dump on me in the future.

i heard it again and now i am starting to think it is my hard drive. this time it sounded more like a click and it was pretty loud. its weird because i figured the system would freeze when it would it would do this which is why i thought it was my blu ray drive.

upon further inspection on my ps3 it is definitely my hard drive. i put my ear right right next to the hard drive and i was hearing clicking noises. i wasnt hearing it before because my fan is louder than the hard drive making it hard drive hard to hear.

clicking and grinding are signs of worn out HDD.
backup and get spare for when the day it crashes on you. Western Digital has a great loyalty program and warranty program, go to their website and punch in your manufacture number and check if you qualify for a discount.
