A modding question or two (or three) ...
A modding question or two (or three) ... –

Hi everyone.
My name is Chris, I am new to this site and I wanted to take a mo or two to say howdy ... so ... howdy.
Now that that is out of the way, I had a question or two.
I am looking for some advice or a tutorial on how to softmod my PS3 if that is possible. The one that I have is pretty old ... maybe around 3 or 4 years old (I haven't actually turned it on and played it for nearly 8 months). I have looked around your site and seen some different stuff but what I am confused about is some terms. Namely "jailbreak" and "softmod"
So my questions are:
1) Are the terms jailbreak and softmod interchangeable?
2) If not what does each one mean?
3) By which term would I have more success searching for tutorials for?
4) Is it possible to softmod a PS3 - by that I mean are there tutorials?
5) What exactly would softmodding a PS3 allow one to do? (play games from a USB drive for example)
I am no stranger to modding. I have successfully hardmodded my PSP, my Wii, and have recently managed to root my android phone (not a big feat I know - I just wanted to throw that in there), I was simply wanting a push in the right direction.
Any push will do.
Thank you in advance for any and all help.
Chris.

1- pretty much
2- jailbreak because that is what geohot called it when he did it and what the original hack was called also (PS Jailbreak), soft mod is the same thing just another name basically. But the JB more or less refers to the use of a dongle.
2- jb, cfw, ps3 hack, ps3 homebrew, etc
4- sure, it is a very simple process for some. others need to downgrade their hardware to 3.55 before they can hack their systems
5- Better media player, backup support, emulator support, PSN PKG hacks, all through USB drives or internal
If you want to start somewhere, I would suggest taking a look at the links in my sig, or simply ask some more questions so we can get you going in the right direction.

I updated answer two a little more, to describe the differences between JB and softmod.

OK I feel kind of like a dork here ... and I would like to go ahead and pre-appologize for sounding like one but ...
the links in your sig are great but after looking at them I am still a bit confused. Some of the acronyms used are a bit confusing.
What is:
PS3Dev (looks to be information on PS3 from a developers standpoint)
Rebug (This one I was really confused about - is this a custom firmware?)
Gitbrew (This is another one I was confused about - completely lost)
Cheat PKG's (These appear to be cheat packages for different games, but I have no idea how one would even use them)
PS3 Brew - this seems to be some sort of homebrew package
v2.0 (This just appears to be different homebrew packages)
PS Vita Brew - This looks like it is for the vita (which I don't have)
The wall of fame looks interesting, but there a lot of people on it. Is this where I would find tutorials on jailbreaking?
Let me know how far off I am on these please. Also, which one would contain the tutorials for jailbreaking the PS3?
Thank you again, for your patience and help (and for listening to dorky questions)
Chris.

PS3DevWiki = A place made for, and updated, by the PS3 scene devs. You can find all sorts of information here, about the PS3 and it's processes.
Rebug = A PS3 scene Team, that is known for making their own custom firmware, along with other tools.
Gitbrew = Another team, known for their work on OtherOS enabling CFWs, and other tools.
Cheat PKGS = Various installable/removable cheats for PS3 games. Need a hacked PS3 in order to use these
PS3 Brew = My collection of links and downloads PS3 scene related.
v2.0 = My old list has not been updated in a long time. I an remaking the list currently, to be better than ever before.
PS Vita Brew = Links/downloads for the Vita
Now, for your tutorials, your best bet would be to check out the PS3 Brew v1.0. Once there, you can scroll down to the CFW (towards bottom of post 1) section and take a look at the Kmeaw link. And then in post 3, there are several links, including this one(click me!) that might help you get started.
