Hello,
I recently purchased the avr max usb 2.1 from vgcrepairs. When I insert it into my PC "Unrecognized device" win 7 ultimate- nothing else happens. Eventually the single red light just shuts off and nothing. Any ideas
? At my wits end, already paid to send it back once for repair. thank you

Perhaps you have a link for this driver? I don't really have the money to send it back for repair yet again..

Okay, does anyone have any success with win 7 using MAX AVR USB 1.2? If so, what are the steps?

The Maximus 32kb v2.1 doesn't have the ATMEL chipset. You can't use FLIP software on that board. The board on v2.1 is PIC instead.
HYBRID MAN!

I'm aware, I am using HIDbootloader, it doesn't work regardless..

If you are using the Maximus 1.2 with PIC chip, for it to work, do the following:
On the PC...Load up the HIDLoader...
Then hold in the small little button in the hole on the top with something like a tack...while holding it in and keeping it held, insert it into your PC...I would try a different USB Port you haven't used before...
And yes Windows 7 doesn't need additional drivers as Win7 will automatically install it.
If you did it right the HIDLoader will show that the device is connected. You should know what to do from there.
