A Lost Man on 3.56, In Need of Some Kind Assistance

I currently have a PS3 on 3.56 that I'm severely confused on. The Blu-Ray drive does not work, and I'm looking to load all of my backups onto it. However, I cannot find any solid information on what to do. I've read that I could use a modchip, however, I'm a college student (so I can't solder on campus) and I'm also not overflowing in funds to spend on buying one. I've read about the JFW DH 3.56 firmware, but I'm reading elsewhere that I couldn't load it without going to 3.55, while some say you can indeed load it onto 3.56 from the ofw. I've also read that some applications can be signed (or something) to work on ofw, and since I'm only wanting to play my backups (and don't need to play online), this solution could work to. I'm just confused by all of the information and would like some assistance.

If JFW does indeed work, I've also read that it has a Universal MAD downgrader that would get my console to 3.55, which would allow me to install normal 3.55 cfw. Thanks for your kind help!

I've never used JFW 3.56 but it's probably your best bet. If it doesn't work out for you you can always install 3.56 official and there would be no loss. I'm not sure if it will install with a busted BluRay drive. Some firmwares do if they're patched, but if it's not patched for it then it won't install. The JFW forum is all in spanish. I'm using firefox and I have the bookmark bar. Whenever I need the whole page translated I click this button. You'll have to manually add it to your broser. Just name it english and for the link enter this

You cannot install ANY jailbroken firmware on 3.56 or above. Even the JFW 3.56 WILL NOT WORK. All jailbroken firmwares require you to first be on OFW 3.55, so you will need to invest in a downgrader, either by purchasing an E3 Flasher, a Progskeet, or by getting someone to do the downgrade for you.
