Looking for preflashed PS3 modchip, which one?
Looking for preflashed PS3 modchip, which one? –

Hello all, I'm very excited about all the homebrew possibilities for my PS3, I am just unsure of which unit to buy and which reseller to get it from. I am in the US and I would prefer a preflashed model so I don't have to mess around with PC drivers and hex's (not that I'm incapable, I'd rather just pay a few bucks more and avoid the hassle.) I'd like to spend around $30-40, and be able to upgrade later although I'd gladly sacrifice the ability to upgrade the chip and pay around $26 or so. I don't mind buying another chip later on. Which are the most reputable resellers with the best customer service and fastest shipping?
Thanks!
edit: browsing the forums it looks like PS3key is the one to get. Is this true? Where should I buy it?

Only buy a PS3Key from an official reseller: http://www.ps3key.com/en/buy/
if you order elsewhere, you're probably going to get a fake, unupgradable one
If you want something really cheap, you can get a USBbreak for $20-25 on Chinese sites. It is 100% not upgradable via USB so it will be useless if things move on and software needs updating.
Chinese sites which sell cheapo dongles are:
lightake.com
sunsky-online.com

If you're not fussed about upgrades then try volumerate.

Thanks for the reply. I'm leaning toward the PS3key from an official reseller, but if I did want to grab a cheapo dongle is it guaranteed to work? I understand they won't be upgradable, but am I reasonably assured the core functionality of backup loaders/homebrew? I figure I could upgrade to a ps3key later on if necessary.

How about something like the USBBreak from Digimartz which is on the official list for USBBreak.com. Are they a fast/reliable reseller?

you will lose core functionality eventually. Given newer versions of PSgroove are slowly being released. So go with an upgradeable one.

How so? Assuming the USBBreak works and I stay on 3.41 shouldn't everything continue to work as advertised? The only way it would break functionality is if I upgrade the firmware. No?

You will have core functionality; he's saying that you'll lose out in the future IF there are PSGroove updates. However, I think there will be cfw before there is an essential upgrade that you'll need. But that's my opinion. I think you're safe for now. Either way, if there is an update, you'll probably be able to get your hands on a Teensey by then. You can go for the quick solution now.
