Looking to buy a PS3: could use tips
Looking to buy a PS3: could use tips –
I see plenty of threads with info, but they all assume you have basic knowledge of the scene (unless I missed one). I'm looking to buy a PS3 that I'll be able to play back ups of newer games on (Demon/Dark Souls mainly in mind). I'd also like to be able to go use PSN.
From what I've seen so far is I need a 3.55 or lower FW PS3 and a True Blue Dongle to accomplish this. How do I even determine the FW version of a console in say a pawn shop? What other things do I need to take into consideration? Are there any nuances between the different versions of the consoles such as between 2/4 USB ports or fat/slim that I need to know about?
First and for most. newer games do not run on CFW without a patch and trueblue is far from supporting all of them or even all the good ones.... not that there isn't a pretty sizable chunk of them that they do.
second PSN is currenttly not at all possible on CFW do to sony's recent update.
third if you want Full backwards compatability you need the unit with card readers etc. or you can obtain software based playback using the cobra dongle (this does work but there will be games that just will not play.
fourth buying used can be a risky route. Might i suggest only using top rated ebay sellers for this purpose. since you will not find a modable unit in your average retail outlet. (some units you obtain may be but don't bank on it)
fifth given what you want your best option would be a unit with the dual nand mod (this requires hardware) which would let you freely swap between OFW whatever and CFW 3.55 in this way you can swap to OFW for PSN and new games and back to CFW for homebrew/backup titles. This will require a secondary hard drive as well.
6th don't waste money on the true blue. you will have to preorder the true blue 2 and wait for it to come out. and frankly if this CEX to DEX conversion news on the front page pans out the scene will be flooded with game fixes for CFW that don't require a dongle.
7th I personally like the fat model more than the slim so yeah it's really your call there.
8th i buy from this seller all the time for modable items. have to pay a little extra but it comes with a 2 month warranty and it can be covered with a square trade protection plan. So this is a reliable source for good quality consoles and rest assured it will work or it will be refunded or exchanged. I've bought multiple jailbreakable consoles from this person and have always had great customer service.

first off, i would forget about using PSN. not going to happen if you want a hacked console. it's been too much of a cat and mouse game to use it reliably, for the most part. dont know much about dongles. seems like a waste to me but i could be wrong. i dont really follow them. but yes, you do need a firmware version 3.55 or lower. the only way to tell this is to power it on and check. however, there are models that, even if it is later than 3.55, you can downgrade with a hardware hack. if you are only going to do it once it's cheaper to have someone do it for you that owns the equipment than to do yourself. this site list the models and if they are downgradable:
ps3devwiki . com /wiki/SKU_Models
(dont have enough posts for links)
basically any model older than CECH 25XX is downgradable. some CECH 25XX models are some arent. best not to gamble. anything newer, cant be downgraded. also, the "X" in the model number is a variable; the model number doesnt actually contain the character "X". you can also check out ebay for used ps3 on 3.55
if i am incorrect in anything, someon please correct me. hope that helps.
got it mostly right there m8. only thing is the dongles while I personally feel them a waste of money do indeed serve a purpose. but as I mentioned don't buy true blue. the original dongle is out of stock on any reliable retail site and you are forced to wait for the new true blue 2 thats being worked on.
I mentioned pretty much all you will need to know asside from that downgrade info. but frankly the downgrading should be done by someone else if you arent really savy in this sort of thing and dual nand/nor mod is a great option but it's a costly piece of hardware. if yo want PSN reliably and to be able to purchase/download things from it you will have to use this route. look into e3 flasher.
Thanks for the replies. You guys have been very helpful so far.
I'm unconcerned with backwards compatability. I'll just play my back ups of archaic games through emulators.
I checked out ps3devwiki . com /wiki/SKU_Models and didn't see a colum that says "Downgradable", but you did mention anything older than CECH 25XX is viable so I'll hope that's a universal. This model number should be checkable somewhere on the physical console itself right?
I think I'll go the route of two hard drives in order to have CFW on one and OFW on the other for PSN though I don't fully understand what you were saying in regards to that, mike. You say I need a "dual nand mod". It's not as simple as swapping the harddrives (I've never touched a PS3, but with a 360 the harddrive is easily removable)?
edit: I checked out ps3devwiki . com /wiki/Dual_Firmware, but it's not very beginner friendly. There should be some guides around here even an Apple user could follow that would tell them what's needed for all this. Preferably I'd just start up my console and be able to choose which FW I'm booting rather than reflashing it each time I want to swap.

Yes as it stands right now you need to use a hardware flasher with the dual nand. it's very far from noob friendly and frankly a pain in the ass to install on certain consoles and can really **** it up if done wrong. as for just swapping hard drives not that simple. you will have to have a hard drive for each memory flash you have on the console. and again PS2 games will only work on backwards compatible and cobra USB. so make your choice or go with niether. and PS2 backups require cobra USB to play on any console I believe.
If you are unable to do with the dual nand option your best bet is to buy a second PS3 that you keep stock and up to date. because otherwise you are stuck waiting for the TB 2 or another solution for new games or updating. and like I said true blue is far from able to play them all. and even if we regain PSN on CFW Its a safe bet we still wont be able to download/activate anything purchased after 11/1/11 that reqiures activation to download. (if you are new to PS3 this would be everything except demos and such.)
So like I said the two options are
1. two Ps3s (easiest option and thinking about it it's only about $100 USD more than a jailbreakable unit with the other hardware)
2. Dual flash memory. (much harder to do/work with. going to run at least about $100 USD to purchase and have it installed if you cant do so yourself.)
Then I think I'll get a downgradable version, play Demon/Dark Souls for a while, downgrade, and then set up the dual FW eventually. No issues with this right?
Should be no problem in this means. as long as you make absolutely certain it's a model that can be downgraded and are able to install the e3 flasher or other device of your choice into easily. E3 flasher is the product I would recomend but There are other options out there. I'm not really the guy to ask bout downgrading as I have never needed to and therfore only really have bits and pieces of the info.
Mad mike is the e3 dual nand/nor mod up and running?... cuase if so maybe that would be cheaper route, and save space around my tv, than having 2 ps3'z huh?... plus u can use it to downgrade huh? if I buy a slim... ohh yeahhh!
