Just ordered my first PS3 yesterday, reading up on the scene while I wait for it to arrive, am more excited about this than my new job

Been lurking all morning and what I've learnt so far is:
    • kmeaw CFW 3.55 is the one to go for
    • OFW on PS3 should be 3.55 or less to be able to jb (I hope mine is not 3.56+ )
    • Multiman is the backup manager of choice (based on popular preference - nicer UI) tho they all do the same thing (not sure what "stealth" is tho)
    • Always need an original game in the drive.
    • Not sure: There is some .pkg file that need to be installed after every restart before being able to run BM? I also read some stuff about bdemu.pkg
    • Not sure: Backup games from disc to internal HDD using BM and then mount and play from BM?

Seen a few tutorials on CFWs (on here and ps3hax) but they seem pretty dated.

Wanted to know if you guys can link me to a recent tutorial on setting up CFW and using backup managers which have links to the latest files?
Or if not then a high level steps would be helpful for me to read up on.

    Thanks in advance.

    4. No, not always.
    5. The only .pkg file you'll need is bdemu.pkg and you only need to install that the first time you install the CFW after you install the BM.

Been lurking all morning and what I've learnt so far is:
[LIST][*]kmeaw CFW 3.55 is the one to go for
Agreed. It has proven stable over time and is more flexible than many others in that it accepts both signed and unsigned packages. I use it myself.

[*]OFW on PS3 should be 3.55 or less to be able to jb
Yes, that is correct. As yet no homebrews can work with later firmwares.

[*]Multiman is the backup manager of choice (based on popular preference - nicer UI) tho they all do the same thing (not sure what "stealth" is tho)
Agreed. This too is what I use myself, and it has proven very reliable. Also, its author is very active in his continued development and support of it.

[*]Always need an original game in the drive.
Some few games can be used discless, but I never bother doing so.
It is easiest to just keep an original disc in the drive at all times.

[*]Not sure: There is some .pkg file that need to be installed after every restart before being able to run BM?
No, that is incorrect for your choice of CFW and BM.

With some combinations it is necessary to use a special patcher in every boot session, to ensure proper working of the backup disc redirection. But it is done differently with kmeaw+multiMAN

I also read some stuff about bdemu.pkg
That is the difference mentioned above. Instead of having to use the lvl2 patcher in every session to provide a working 'jailbreak payload' we simply install the bdemu package instead, which is a once-only operation. Thereafter multiMAN will get the needed payload code from that installed package, automatically, even after installing new multiMAN packages over the old one.

Only if you delete the multiMAN package entirely will you have to reinstall the bdemu package again, after reinstalling a new multiMAN package.

[*]Not sure: Backup games from disc to internal HDD using BM and then mount and play from BM?
That's almost correct. For most cases you'll select and mount the game inside multiMAN, which then exits to the Sony XBM where you start the game using the normal disc icon (redirected for the game on HDD).

Seen a few tutorials on CFWs (on here and ps3hax) but they seem pretty dated.

My advice is to just read the CFW tutorials that focus on CFW 3.55 kmeaw.

Some of them may be oldish, but since kmeaw has been 100% stable from the start there is no need for newer/updated tutorials. What was true and correct at its start remains so today.

As for multiMAN, just install the latest version (and then the bdemu package) and try using it.
It really isn't all that hard once you get started with it.

    Best regards: dlanor

ok thanks for your replies, very useful dlanor.

I think the only step I was missing was installing the bdemu package, I'll read up on that too and I should be sorted.
