Just Received My Tax Return!
Just Received My Tax Return! –
02-12-2011,04:41 PM
So I promised myself that the federal government would buy my first PS3 when I got my return. To my surprise, I woke up this morning with a large extra chunk of change in my account, so I am itching to run down to Best Buy and pick up a PS3. A couple of questions, first:
I want to jailbreak my PS3 so that I can backup my games to my external hard drive and boot/play them from the hard drive. What type of PS3 should I absolutely NOT buy? Through some research I've heard some are better than others.
I am experienced with hacking Xbox and Wii. I have a 500 GB external drive to my Wii running homebrew with about 60 games, but I'm sick of the Wii so I'm going to sell it and format that hard drive so it can be my new drive for my PS3. I understand a lot of people will read this and say "Google is your best friend" or "do your own research" but I want to know for sure before I go drop $300+ on a new system. Is this same type of thing (playing backups off an external hard drive) completely doable on a new PS3? From the research I've done, you can now jailbreak your system by creating your own dongle through a USB drive, is this still true?
Just like the Wii, I know there are many routes to accomplishing what I want. Research shows many different opinions so I am asking you, what is the best route to take? Just give me file names or hack names, I can search for myself, you don't even have to post a link. I'm just asking for some guidance in the right direction. Best Buy closes in a couple of hours, so any help towards creating a first time PS3 gamer would be greatly appreciated!

According to what I read in twitter...
Kmart is doing a good deal where you get the System and a free extra controller. Think it was the 160gig model

Well it easy, Buy any ps3 it doesn`t matter wich one.
If you want to play from your external harddrive i should buy a 160 GB ps3 SLIM
if you want to play from your internall harddrive i should buy a 320 GB ps3 SLIM
All ps3 in the shops will be V3.55< so
1 Buy the ps3 of your choice.
2 Check the firmware of it, If it is V3.55 update to CFW.
3 If it isn`t download V3.55 but it on a usb flash drive, Update to V3.55
4 Download KMEAW CFW 3.55 update to it.
5 Enjoy your *60 BACKED UP GAMES*
6 Install linux, Its nice

any ps3 on firmware 3.55 or lower is hackable dosen't matter the model your going to get a slim so i would just get the 120-160gig model since you have a 500gig external already can always upgrade the internal harddrive latter on if you want and yeah just google CFW 3.55 Kmeaw and follow the direction you'll need multiman for back-ups and our set

Personally from my own experience...I would highly recommend the 320GB model! Now that the new CFW 3.55 allows for for game Updates...you will fill up the smaller model HD's pretty fast! I have a 320GB and a 120GB...the 120GB after Updating all the games does not have much room at all left to install any of the games that ONLY run from the Internal. A 160GB model is only 40GB larger and still would not be sufficient in my opinion. If you have the money to spare...I can promise you that you will not regret spending the extra money for the larger 320GB model.
Like the Nike motto "Just Do It"....go buy one from any store. It takes all of about 10 minutes...if that, to do the complete CFW 3.55 upgrade and install Blackbox, Gaia, and Multiman.
And..just in case...here is a link to the super simple procedure:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/cfw...ll-pack-77294/ (CFW kmeaw + OFW 3.55 + GAIA 2.05 ready to install pack)
Have fun...and welcome to the PS3 family!!

I feel your pain man...but I'm in even a worse situation...did not know the wife was claiming 3 exemption also on her payroll...so now I OWE a total of just over $800 to the State and Federal government.

The one and probably ONLY good thing about purchasing one from Wal-Mart is...the extended warrenty...if you so choose to purchase...is absolutely DIRT CHEAP...the cheapest of any store! Alteratively....you can purchase an extended warranty from a website called "Squaretrade"....they are even cheaper. Its well worth the few dollars spent to protect your new PS3!!

You have a good point there...almost forgot about that. Tax on my 320GB bought at a local store was an extra $24. But if he is like me...when I make up my mind about wanting something...I want it right NOW...lol.
Whatever you do...since you have some $$ I would HIGHLY recommend against buying a used model...no matter how good of a deal it seems!!

Thank you so much for the comments! Come to find out, Best Buy has a deal for a $50 instant gift card when purchasing a new system, so I'm headed there as soon as I get done with this post!
