Install updates as pkg files via usb

I have downloaded an update for my game using the java app update downloader 1.7, and have saved the pkg file to a usb. I want to install this on my ps3, my question is do I have to install this in unjailbreak mode? Or is it safe to install the USB update whilst in JB mode? (Hermes V4b)

You can only install packages while in jailbreak mode. How would you do it without being in jailbreak mode?

You FTP it to VSH/TEMP via jailbreak mode and it appears when you restart in normal mode. This was the way it was done before the payloads were updated to allow direct install of retail .PKGs from INSTALL/PACKAGES.

Debug packages worked fine before though. So if we're talking debug updates you are correct, but if we are talking retail updates then you are incorrect.
