I'm buying a PS3 tonight. What to look for?

Hi everyone

I buying a PS3 tonight, and the owner claims there is 3.55 firmware on it. Besides looking at the setting menu is there anything else i should be looking for?

The seller is also claiming it has been "jail broken" but cant seem to tell me with what custom firmware.
Is there a way to see what custom firmware has been installed?


I am going to bring a harddrive (FAT32) with me, that has a couple of backed up games on it just to see if i can get a game up and running.

Is there anything else i can look at durring the sale that would be able to help me make a good purchase?

Tell him to update it to Rogero or Rebug 4.30 in front of you or properly put it on a usb yourself and do it... You don't want 3.55, that ish is outdated. And as long as it boots multiman and boots backups your good..

PS3UPDAT.PUP there's Rogero 4.30.. What you do on your usb drive, create a folder named PS3 then inside that make a folder named UPDATE then inside that one put the file I gave you, stick it in the 2nd usb port and then on the ps3 main menu click update under settings then via storage device. Make sure there's no disc in.

listen to the fan see if its making a loud noise sumtimes suggests it may of had ylod check to see if the original security sticker is still on if not ask why it has been removed.

Be careful you dont buy a lemon... one day it works and 2 weeks later it breaks. Better ask for the ps3fax. LOL

Question: When i go to settings in the menu of the ps3, to check what version the firmware it is, will it say 3.55? If it is custom firmware will it say or look something different?

If i did the Rogero 4.30 update, and then checked the settings menu, what would the firmware version look like?

Would it say 4.30 or still say 3.55?

Would the Custom Firmware Validator software be helpful in this situation?

Thanks for the other suggestions, i will listen to the fan and check if the sticker has been tampered with. I wish there was ps3fax! Id pay the 10 bucks to check!

Yeah if it's on 3.55 cfw it'll just say 3.55, After updating to Rogero 4.30 the firmware version will say 4.31

I bought it! It has 3.55 on it. Thanks for helping with the questions. I am going to read the toutorials and im sure ill have a few more questions.

You should get a flash backup and enable the QA flag while you're still on 3.55CFW to be safe. Then update to a newer custom firmware, I recommend Rebug or Rogero 4.30.

dang, i didnt read this post in time and went ahead and upgraded to Rogero 4.30

I am reading like a mad man trying to get multiman to see my games in my external harddrive. So far no luck.
