Hello all from a newbie
I am just entering the realm of breaking my PS3 and am a little stuck. I have done a lot of reading on net forums and selected this as probably the best to dive into for help and support and informative reading. I do find however on forums that you all expect everyone else to be as knowledgable as you and the chat at times is a little too technical for a newbie like myself. Using abbreviations and terminology us newbies dont always understand hence please excuse any stupid questions.
I have just purchased a minimus 32k board with the nice team executer case and have read enough to be happy how to get up and running.
I should point out that I do not connect my PS3 to the internet.
I want to follow the guide for getting 3.42 games playing on 3.41 by correcting the ISO file . I was initially confused as the guide assumed everyone knows correcting the ISO file is done on a PC and not the console so after reading up I am happy what software and how to do it.
My question is how do I get an ISO file into my PC . I dont know of any sites which would be safe virus free locations for game downloads. Safe recomendations welcome.
SO is there a way to rip the game from my original disc into my PC as an ISO so I can alter it and put the file on my external drive.
I cant seem to find out how to do this.

Rip the game to an external HDD with a backup manager, unplug the external HDD from your PS3 and plug it into your computer. Edit the files, and plug the HDD back into the PS3. Simple as that. If you don't have an external HDD or the game files are over 4gb (external has to be formatted as fat32 to work which has a limitation of 4gb for individual file size), then you can install a ftp program (Blackbox FTP server) or use the FTP servers built into various backup managers (Gaia, Rogero's, or MultiMan) and connect to your PS3 and transfer the files to your PC for editing and then transfer back when done. Mind you, there's usually only a couple of files that need editing, and they're not that big.

ISO files aren't used, the folder structure from within the disk is backed up and that's what we use. there's no way to do that with a PC currently, it has to be ripped to the internal drive or an external USB drive connected to the PS3 using a backup manager. Once it's ripped you can plug the external into your PC and edit the files from there or use an FTP program to modify files on the internal drive.
Piracy discussion isn't encouraged here, that part's up to you to find out.

I see
I didnt know whether the firmware update on the gamedisc would update the machiine before backup manager ripped it to my external HDD.
Sounds good.
regarding the piracy issue , I,m only looking to back up games I actually own as I run all my DVD collection from a drive connected to my entertainment equipment and just want to do the same with my games.
Fair enough re the rules but if I can use the process above then I dont need to locate ISO files on the net.
Thanks and hopefully off I go.
