Been reading alot of threads today where people mention that they bricked their systems and people are offering the solution of replacing the NAND but you would need to have had your NAND backed up and had Infectus installed. (i thought infectus was just a dongle with a specific hex, what would i install??)

I have a CECHA01 and I am thinking I should backup my NAND if something happens. Can I just transfer the dev flash folders to an external HDD through file manager or FTP? I almost bricked myself a week or so ago by installing a bad update pkg for duke nuke em (the download did not complete and i tried to install a 1 kb .pkg!! that led to an RSOD that went away luckily after i powered off and back on)

So yeah I want to be able to fix my PS3 one day because I am reading about so many people bricking their system that i want to be prepared. What is the best way to prepare just in case the NAND goes bad.

    Thanks!!

infectus is a modchip that connects directly to the NAND..

um the only way currently is to use linux, although i havent done it.

so i need to have the otherOS function then. I tried installing AsbestOS back in March and installing Debian Linux but I could never get it to work. I looked up many tutorials, read them thoroughly and did exactly what they said to do and linux would never install. Something about a problem with the bootloader, I forget. Im not a Linux person so I'm not familiar with it but I wanted to try it out but unfortunately, I couldnt get it working.

So when I look at file manager and I see those 3 dev_flash folders, I cant just FTP those to my PC to backup my NAND??

No. That does not backup your NAND. You need to either have an infectus or use use this pkg from gameOS: Here. Unless you use infectus, you won't get console specif info like CSD and EID, but it's close. Don't reflash unless you have a full backup, which is exactly 256MB

Thanks for this info Th0r. So what you are saying, the only way to have a proper working back up of my NAND is to solder this infectus chip onto the NAND and using the software to dump my flash to pc. Then with this if I get an RSOD due to a corrupted NAND (not hardware failure) I can reflash and unbrick the ps3??

Also, im assuming if i go and buy the chip it will have a soldering diagram for the ps3 nand? I havent soldered since metal shop in junior high but I would defintiely practice for a week or so on less important electronics or get someone with the skillz.

Yes to the top part. No to the bottom part. There isn't a good diagram on soldering it but the closest is here

edit: I just said screw it, I emailed the guy from that Mainline website asking for help on the install. I'd rather just pay a pro to do something this crazy. lol
