There is only one way to "fix" it as you say but if it doesn't work then you are out of luck. This works for a lot of games like Heavy Rain. First you have to install on internal HDD then start the game for the first time. After it updates etc and is up and running then exit back to XMB and go to a file manager and move it to the external HDD. It should work then. If not then it just won't work on external HDD. You need to update it to 1.01 to get it to work and this can be done from Multiman without going into the game.

Nope never needed it as I have the game on internal and I can't update games with my PS3 anymore. Try what I said and I will probably work for you. Every game I had troubles with on an external I did this with and worked fine. Heavy Rain works this way off an external drive.
