I'm out of service mode and am on 3.41 but don't know if pressing update will brick my ps3. Can anyone tell me if its ok to just put 3.50fw on a usb and update. Thanks.

If you're out of service mode, then yes, you can update to 3.50 via USB or PSN.
I think you can connect the PS3 to the Sony. and then the PSN can upgrade your PS3.
