How to play games from an external drive?

Create a folder at the root of your external drive called GAMEZ. Put all your games inside of that folder.

Grand, but do I have to partition the hard drive to make it FAT32? Also, if I have a terabyte and I format that, will I still have a terabyte worth of space?

Yes you have to format it to FAT32, and yes you will still have 1tb. While formatting it you'll probably end up losing about 500mbs.

Finally, I've realised why I can't run the backups on my PS3, its due to me not having the Enable PSFreedom BDMV version while only having the homebrew version, does anyone have the hacked version?

You do know that a terabyte is 932 gigabytes right?
A hard drive manufacturers specification uses the calculation that a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes - which is approx 5% less than it should be, same goes when calculating how many megabytes in a gigabtye (1000 instead of 1024) and likewise for gigabytes in a terabyte.
When you format you will still end up with about 930 gigabytes - the loss from formatting is only small compared to the loss from the manufacturers method of calculation lol.
