How much has piracy increased ?

just wanted to know does anyone know the statistics on game sales. have they gone down. ever since cfw was released ? like the piracy scene has exploded . so please just your thoughts . no brawling here

the piracy scene has most definitely exploded. I know a guy (not the most representative argument, ofcourse) who specifically BOUGHT a ps3 just because he could just pirate games now.

the problem is, you can't really measure it accurately since sales numbers _heavily_ depend on the quality of releases. (CoD: BO, LBP2, Killzone 3 etc. definitely pushed software sales numbers)

Well the problem with piracy is : this guy would never have bought a ps3 without cfw , so he wouldn't ever bought any ps3 game...

I think piracy isn't that kind of a problem - all successful console in history got hacked...

just saying that if people buy PS3s SPECIFICALLY for pirating games, i'm quite sure that the threshold of whether to buy a game (or just to rip it from a rental) definitely went down even on most of the legit people.

The argument isn't whether or not it is piracy, it is clear it indeed is, but the argument is whether or not it was lost sales: all the Big Media corporations try to insist that every pirated game equals lost sales. The problem is that there's plenty of people who pirate something yet they wouldn't ever actually buy it if it wasn't available in the pirated form and thus the Big Media claim is incorrect.

Another one people themselves try to insinuate is that a pirate equals a cheater. That is also not true, there's plenty of so-called pirates that would never touch cheats because it takes out all the fun of the game.

Piracy hasnt really changed all that much, its just that now the PS3 is available to do it on too.

It only "seems" like its increased, since its become the main focus of Sony and they are making big news about it, thats about all thats really increased.

I agree : cheating has nothing to do with piracy.
You dont have to be a pirate to cheat and you dont have to be a cheater to pirate.

Every pirate i know would never cheat in a game - anyway the most people say "cheating is for children", console games these days arent that hard, that you cant finish them without cheating....

I bought my first ever PS3 just before last christmas. I have about 7 games on it. All playable online (Lots of friends play RDR online and i didnt wanna keep missing out).

I recently bought a 2nd hand EBAY ps3 with a stuffed bluray lens. I got one of them 95 game HDDs and cam play a fair few games off it atm. all the games i would have never paid for as they mostly dont appeal to me enough.
(though, NBA2K11 is way rad)

I wont buy any more ps3 games though. still gotta finish the few I own and since sony are being complete ****tards about it, I think i'll just upgrade my PC instead. Piracy has been on PC forever and I dont see all companies falling apart.
