I got a PS3 at launch... UK April 06?

Got 2 games, hated em, (Motor storm, Resistance).

Sold Em......... PS3 been dormant since. May have played 3-6 Blurays on it. since.

Basicaly its NEW.

Now the "exploit" has arrived it may be getting used more, ...

what worries me is if it breaks and i have to replace it... 3.41 machines will be LONG GONE!

Do many people on here have a spare and did they get it for this purpose and...

how many folks have had a PS3 DIE?

Everyone i know with 360 has killed it (15-20 people)...

But no such stories with PS3..?

And with being able to load from external, this will releive the optical drive from doing anything much really........

Well, the string holding up my trousers is about 48 inches.

And the string holding up my bunch of onions in the shed is about 36 inches...... so an average would be about 40? :lol:

Make sure that the PS3 is well ventilated, perhaps get one of those fan kits?

Anyhow, it's often the blu-ray laser that goes first on most consoles. If you only use it for backups, that won't be a problem!

You could probably keep it alive for a very very long time, it's all a matter of keeping it cool. Once or twice a year, crack it open and use compressed air to clean any dust. Also, to be on the safe side, get a power chord extender with EFI-filter and surge protection.

I get a fair few in for repair mainly the YLOD and Laser faults, actually had a slim in a couple of weeks ago but that was because they had stood on it squashing the drive casing (How the hell do you stand on one????)

I got a 80gb version may time last year and rarely played it except for the occasional fifa games and singstar when friends are round.
I got the JB device and within the space of backing up 3 or 4 games the laser give up on me. But those nice guys at $ony replaced it as a goodwill gesture :)

I had noticed the machine starting to get louder before as well so i think it could have been looking at dying with or without the JB device.

Although friends who play theirs solidly and have had them since launch or not long after have had no problems.

In short there is no time frame and a lot is down to luck. The fact yours has been stood idle (similar to mine) means it could have been gathering dust internally which in turn could well cause problems.

The supposed average life time of any piece of electronics is 10 years. Things that can make that average even shorter is if there are any mechanical things inside the said piece of electronics.

But with the PS3, not only does it have mechanical moving parts, but it endures a lot of heat stress which is the major cause of YLOD.

Al in all, it really depends on how well you take care of it and how often you play it. If you make sure that it is properly ventilated, and even replace sony's crap thermal compound with some good high quality stuff and regularly clean out the dust then your console could last a very long time.

In the end though, any piece of electronics could last 10 days before failure or 50 years. Some even are DOA. It is rather unpredicable how long your PS3 will last.

You could have 2 PS3's sitting side by side and playing games the same amount of time and one could last years longer than the other. In the end, there is no average life span for the PS3. But it is more common that your laser would burn up before your PS3 would YLOD.....that is unless you jailbreak your PS3 and just play backups for now on ;)
