How to install PS3 games to xmb that need hdd installation

This tutorial is only for 3.41 as I haven't upgraded to a CFW(not YET anyway)Here is how to install PS3 games to xmb that require an in-game harddrive installation, not many games work with .pkg installation to xmb but with this method it greatly increases the amount that work.

Also note that installing a game package with this method you dont need to use a jailbreak to play the game. Although a jalbreak dongle is needed throughout the installation process.

First Download "Pkg Builder" from here: h t t p : / / forums.qj.net/ps3-hacks-exploits-homebrew/175027-pkg-builder.html without spaces.
In Step 2 of pkg builder change game path to....... eg. for Tomb Raider I entered "TOMBGAME" I then copied the games USRDIR directory to dev_hdd0\TOMBGAME (but delete the eboot.bin or you'll get an error) and make sure the name is in CAPS and has 8 letters/numbers. Also an easy way is to make a folder eg. TOMBGAME on you desktop and transfer it to dev_hdd0\game with ftp then put the USRDIR folder of the game into that folder with multiman if its on internal or external hdd or with ftp if its on your computer.

Remember to run Pkg Builder in Adminsistator mode so it can write files OK. Just right click it

Doing the following steps your basically installing the game you want into a different Game ID folder than is the standard because the PS3 doesn't like you making your own folders in the game directory.
1. Make a pkg file for the game you want AND make a pkg file for a game you DONT want....... Then install both.
2. Open Multiman or another file manager and find the folder for the game you dont want eg. dev_hdd0/game/"UN-wanted game" and delete the contents then copy the contents of the folder of the game you want into that folder.
3. Now exit to xmb and delete the original pkg icon keeping the game pkg that has the right icon but has the name of the UN-wanted game, dont worry about the wrong name it will correct itself after the first time you load it.
4. Use your backup manager to start the game, let it install the game data and when it's finished exit the game and turn off the PS3

Start the PS3 without the jailbreak and play your game

Remember that not all games work with .pkg installation, I have personally tried it with Resident Evil Gold Edition that requires game data to be installed and it worked perfectly, I will try some more games and update with the results.

Games that are working that need Game Data installed:
Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition
Lost Planet 2
The Orange Box (but a jailbreak dongle is needed)

Games that are working that dont need Game Data installed:
Tomb Raider Underworld
