This is the way I did it:

1-Go from Geohot 3.55 to OFW 3.55 directly from the system update option on the xmb, make sure to have the OFW (PS3UPDAT.PUP) on a USB device in the following folder starting at the root: PS3-->UPDATE

2-Once the OFW is installed, just install kmeaw 3.55 on top of it, using the same method, make sure to rename kmeaw's 3.55 CFW the same as a regular OFW (PS3UPDAT.PUP) obviously, make sure to delete the original before doing this.

3-You're done and can now install backup managers and whatnot

NOTES: Some will say to go through the system recovery mode to roll back to OFW but I was too lazy and didn't, everything still went fine. Note that I was on a slim so if you wanna play it safe, google the exact method to go into recovery mode.

Also note that if you don't wanna screw around with payloads and whatever, make sure to get multiman 1.15.05, it has everything included to play your backups and works great.

I agree, many people just repeat what they read. On my slim it went great without recovery mode, too.
