how do you stop ps3 from updating? !!!

got a new ps3 on black friday. think it had OFW 3.4 out of the box. at the time every thing i found on line said it could not be jail broke. i periodically check back on line to see the progress with new CFW, only to find that I still cant jail break because my system has updated to newer OFW. How do I stop this? to my knowledge from what i see under system settings, automatic updates are turned off. but i have went from 3.4 to 4.0 since November. I have not accepted any system updates that i am aware of, and i asked my son and he hasn't installed any either (although we all know know how 13 year olds pay attention) am i over looking something? Im tires of SONY being one step ahead of me all the time

I'm pretty sure the only way it could of been updated is by accepting the update online (just using psn or home or iplayer, etc. will mean an update) or by playing a newer game and accepting it from that. Looks like someone did it and didn't bother reading what the message on the screen said. You can downgrade it using hardware, like the E3 but it's not just a plug and play option. I'm not sure where you found info saying 3.4 can't be jailbroken, it can, very easily and has been jailbreakable since around January last year. I'd either look into the E3 or sit back and wait until/if a new CFW 4+ comes out. Sorry I haven't got better news

Your system has been updated via online check or more probably via software update ((someone has played a game that requires the update...and someone has sayd yes to the messagge..)).
You can downgrade for sure using E3 flasher as Dreamcast Ghost sayd,because using that chip((E3)) you can always restore your OFW,the firmware you have when you bought the console;and you can stop every update using the Spoofer ((google helps..))
