Hi, I'm new to this jailbreak scene too.
have 3.55 cfw, can play a fifa 09 discless, but when i tried fifa 10 same way. it didn't work.
any list out there of games that currently work.
as i intend on upgrading to 500gig hd.
It's hard to say when CFW for 3.60 will come out. With 3.55 CFW, you can't currently access PSN and use it download games, play online through PSN, use netflix, and so on. But if you can live without playing online for a little while, then yes, I'd say you should definitely install 3.55 CFW. Otherwise, you could update to 3.60 OFW and play online and hope that 3.60 CFW comes out soon but at least for now, there's no way to downgrade back to 3.55 if you change your mind.
I'd use kmeaw 3.55 for your CFW. You can back-up games without having to mess with modifying eboot files or anything like that.
I'm not sure what you mean about not being able to handle a backup manager with cfw. You can actually play most games, if not about all games, on CFW using a backup manager--in fact, I play Castlevania on 3.55 kmeaw currently through rogero currently
Install a backup manager after installing CFW. I use rogero, but multiman is probably more popular. When you run your backup manager, it will give you the ability to rip a game currently in your blu-ray drive to the hard drive. Or if you have the game already ripped or backed up on your computer or some external hard drive, you can use an FTP homebrew app called openps3ftp to transfer the files for the game from that hard drive to your ps3's hard drive. That involves setting up an FTP server and using a program on your computer such as filezilla to make the FTP transfer. I'm not sure where you need to put the games if you're using multiman, but with Rogero you put them in a folder called "GAMES" under hdd0/GAMES/. If you rip a game from the blu-ray drive to the ps3 hdd, rogero will automatically create this GAMES folder for you, and you'll be able to see the way it's setup when you look at it through your FTP.
Once the game is on your ps3's hard drive, you can select it through whatever backup manager you're using. Some games can be played without any disc in your ps3, some cannot--I'm not sure why some don't work that way. But it's not too big of a deal if it can't be played discless: just put any ps3 game disc in the drive, doesn't matter what it is, and you're good to go. After selecting the game through the backup manager, you'll then go back to the xmb screen. Under "Games," you'll then see that instead of there being an icon for the game currently in your blu-ray drive, there's be an icon for the game you selected through your backup manager. Click it and play.
In the ps3 forums here, there's a section about game backup. There's information and download links for the backup managers there. You can also go the ps3hacks website to find a list of download links for these and other homebrew apps. Hope this helps for the moment.
I would also welcome some assistance since there are so many references to terms I dont understand and searching just seems to add to my confusion.

BDEMU-355KM - installed but dont really know what this is for?
"Select + X" - What does this do and when is it required?
EBOOT i beleive is the equivalent of a PC executable file, and somehow it can be patched so that it can use a lower version of os (Ie 3.55) when the gane specifies a high minimum version. Should I be using this or does the backup manager patch as it goes along?
Tried running Crysis - it came up with a message about patching or something which I did, but now when it runs it comes up with an error message (80010017) when trying to start. Any ideas how to approach this?
I tried Iris 1.2 as well which show this error upon startup and the same error on crysis...
"Old syscall 36 resident, respect! New payload not loaded... no big files allowed with this payload"
PL3 and Syscall36, what does this mean?
