Piracy talk is a no no on this site (actually, you can talk about it, but not link to it. Either way, I still don't directly talk about it in open forums). But, you can take your legally obtained backup and put it on your external drive. You need to create a folder called GAMEZ. Put your PS3 games in the GAMEZ folder. If your game is in a folder (total random example here) BLES232123 then your folder structure would be X:\GAMEZ\BLES232123. When a game is backed up it's usually put into it's own BLES folder. You can rename that folder to something more meaningful though (ex rename BLES232123 to Sims 3) and it will still work.
If you're using your internal HDD to backup games to, each BM uses a different location, so your best bet is to backup 1 game in the BM and see where it saves it to. That's where you're going to put your BLES folders on your internal. To transfer files to your internal you can either use an external HDD and copy it over with a BM, or you can use the FTP server built into most of the BMs or install Blackb0x FTP Server to FTP the games to your internal HDD.
BM = Backup Manager. Best ones currently are: Rogero's, Gaia, or MultiMan
Thanks again for all your help, I am unable to get my phone connected properly so I was wondering if this would do the job for me:
can I use it to jailbreak the PS3 and is it compatible with a BM?
another question, how do I transfer games from PC to PS3 (lets say I have a legal backup on PC), can I use a USB cable or do I have to do it via FTP (wouldn't it take quite long to transfer over FTP?)
You can use an external HDD with your games in a folder named GAMEZ at the root of the HDD, you can backup the games via original disk, or you can FTP from your PC to the PS3 (wired 100mbit connection you'll get about 35mb/sec)
I managed to install multiMAN and it all works fine, my problem is that I cant seem to load any games, when I press X to load, the game doesnt load, just hangs at a black screen, it asks me about do I want to switch to go to XMB, but when I say yes to that, it just restarts and the game doesnt appear on the XMB (tried using multiman to copy game from external to internal but that doesnt work either) so what do I do? :S
EDIT: is it maybe because the external HDD is split into two partitions?
one is for the PS3 games (fat32)
one is for wii games (WBFS)
