It shouldn't matter. You should be able to install kmeaw just fine via recovery, it's just recommended that you install OFW first. Try another thumb drive, or give us some more information. If it stops at a certain percentage, your friend probably has a bad component that's preventing the update from finishing (bad bd-rom, wifi/bluetooth board, etc).
I updated a few consoles to 3.55 CFW. All straight from 3.50 stock to 3.55 CFW. There was no problem at all. You should try it via recovery menu.
It updates to 100 % but whn installing it gets to 68 % everytime and a error code comes up.Iv tried in safe mode to.Is there anyway to stop the ps3 from trying to install and go back and try ofw3.55 1st
by "safe mode", did you mean the RECOVERY menu? in any case, using the recovery menu to flash to v3.55 OFW first, then v3.55 CFW will work. or, you can rebuild the database from the recovery menu to go back to v3.50 without being in an update loop
Rebuild database is like a disk defrag, it won't put him back at 3.50 or take him out of the update loop.
Your only options are to:
- If possible, install 3.50 form recovery and then 3.55 OFW, and then 3.55 kmeaw
- Flash 3.55 OFW from recovery and install kmeaw
- If you have a dev board, go into service mode and use the modded 3.41(3.56), then 3.41, then 3.55 (OFW or kmeaw)
there are actually many different ways to come outta this, depending on different factors. I think you have a bad bluray control board, but try those steps above to make sure.

ahh, sort of makes sense about the rebuild database option... somebody had once suggested that to me awhile ago so i figured i'd throw it out there. personally, i wouldnt like my ps3 running on a patched up firmware, so i'd flash fresh (flash back to ofw, then back to cfw). but that's just me
yeah, but the only way to downgrade with the ps3 is with a modded firmware then you can easily flash up/down to OFW. I wish it was simpler, but who knows if it'll get simpler.
