Hey guys, my PS3 is showing some early signs of YLOD (wouldn't turn off yesterday, but it still works) and I'm looking to get a slim. The most recent thread I found about this topic was from April 9, and the consensus seems to be 3.50 consoles are still out there. Has that changed at all? Obviously, I'm going to be avoiding those Killzone 3/SOCOM/what have you bundles. I'm looking pretty specifically at the standard 160 GB models.
Or, does anyone have any tips on getting a surefire <3.56 model? I remember seeing a thread on here a while ago where a poster spelled out some good tips (based on what artwork was on the box) but I seem to have lost it.
Thanks for the help guys.

im with you on this. I currently have a FAT PS3 80GB model with current 3.60 firmware. I am thinking of getting a new one though, hoping it will still have 3.50 or 3.55 on it. Anyone got any good tips or advice as to finding a model that hasnt been upgraded at the factory??
or I guess the second option would be to just wait for a 3.60 CFW and never update my current one again. I cant believe I even updated it this whole time. I have played online with my PS3 maybe twice since the past 2 years I have had it. *DOH* I am trying to add the modded PS3 to my list of modded devices. Got Wii, XBOX360, and now wanting a PS3.. *crosses fingers* on getting new CFW for 3.60 soon.

Buy a used one at your local gamestop or pawnshop, have them power it up and see what firmware version its using... Buy your own hard drive off newegg, save some money.

Its gonna be a long minute before it starts to really show. Remember Sony put out millions of consoles with early firmware (literally warehouses full) and they are not about to chunk those just to secure the system, they are banking on games that can't be played without 3.6 like Portal 2 will bring people out of the scene and back on legit consoles. The whole 3.6 default is mostly a bluff for now...maybe in 6 months you'll see it but for now I believe it's still safe.

Where did you order you PS3 from?
I also went to local Gamstop here in town and they didnt even have any used PS3s available to look at lol. Seems a lot of peeps must be snagging them up for the exact same reason I am. well most of the smart ones, anyways lol. I also called all the local pawn shops this past Saturday and not ONE single PS3 there, either. Jeese, Guess I should try again today n tomorrow n see if anyone has brought there's in... Although, I bet more than half the ones I will see in pawn shop is ppl bringin them in to sell/pawn has updated firmware on them.. :-/ *crosses fingers* though.

Out of curiosity, what have you done that has warranted early signs of YLOD? I have a launch model 60GB that every once in a blue moon will not shut off (mostly Fallout buggy nonsense)
Have you done anything to bring it on? Like running it forever or constant hard poweroffs?

what exactly are "early ylod signs"? are there any? aside from not turning off properly, that happens randomly on all cpus. just kinda rare. i have the model in my sig and recently did a teardown and preemptive cpu/gpu thermal paste application. its old and serves as a media server 15hrs a week so i thought it couldnt hurt.

Hey guys, I actually think it might have YLOD'd once already. I was playing MGS4 yesterday, and finished. Then, I hit the PS Button and went to the XMB to shutdown. Instead of shutting down though, the screen went black, (the light on the controller stayed on), and the light on the front of the console started flashing. I'm not really good with colours but I think it was flashing red, then yellow, and it just kept flashing yellow. I left it there for a good 2-3 minutes and it still wouldn't shut off, so I flipped the switch on the back. It was the first time in the console's lifespan that I had ever done that.
I have the MGS4 launch PS3 bundle. It's the one that does software PS2 emulation.
I'm also a pretty normal gamer. My console doesn't stay on for long. I'm not sure if it's ever even been played 4 hours continously.
However, I was doing some browsing online and I'm kind of unsure whether it's actually the YLOD or whether I looked at the light and saw the wrong colour. I couldn't really find anybody saying their console YLOD'd when they tried to turn it off -- usually it would just YLOD by itself.
